HARRISON JOINS | DRIVE TO ALTER TAXON PROFITS

Modification Is Hinted in
General Revision of Revenue Setup.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 12 (U. P.).—The House Ways and Means Tax Suhcommittee, studying the effect upon smaller corporations of the vmdistributed profits tax, today dis cussed the possibility of allowing a graduated credit as a means of providing relief. Existing law provides =a $5000 credit for corporations whose annual income does not exceed $50,000. Asked whether this figure might be graduated, Chairman Fred M. Vinson (D. Ky. said “It might be.”
WASHINGTON, Nov. 12 (U. P). —The campaign for modification | of the undistributed profits tax on
corporate business gained a powerful ally today in Chairman Pat Harrison (D. Miss.) of the Senate | Finance Committee. A telegram from Senator Harri- | son to Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau Jr, gave impetus to the movement as a House Ways and Means Tax Subcommit- | tee indicated a disposition to include modification in the general revision of the revenue structure planned for the regular session of Congress. It was made even more emphatic when two other Administration Senators announced they favor a revision of the act. Senator Minton (D. Ind.) declared for “some modification in the undistributed profits tax te provide for retirement of| legitimate debts and for reasonable expansion.” Senator Thomas (D. Okla.) urged repeal or revision. Senator Harrison, congratulating Mr. Morgenthau on his speech pledging the Administrattion to| curtailed expenditures to balance | the budget, said: “There must be some modification |
of undistributed profits tax and on | my return to Washington next week | hope to confer with you and asso- | ciates and exchange views.”
Ludlow Asks for Laws To Aid Business
To be fully effective in bringing 1ormal prosperity in industry, Secretary of Treasury Morgenthau's retrenchment program must be accompanied by enactment of relief iaws for business, Rep. Louis Lud- | low said in a radio speech last night. Mr. Ludlow pledged support to the economy program outlined by Secretary Morgenthau two days ago, saying “national retrenchment and balanced budget will put honest business on its feet.”
