Poignant Story of Love

a setting of sumptuous and M-G-M has told the poignant story of the love of Napoleon and Marie Walewska in “Conquest,” ‘which opened at Loew's today. ‘Conquest,” we are informed, ranks second in the all-time list of Hollvwood's most expensive productions. It is ® nyere $200,000 short of the four millions With which “Ben Hur” holds the record. Yet its expensiveness does not offend. The regal backgrounds do not distract the stars, Greta Garbo and Charles Bover. The setting is fit for a king and not, fortunately, for a Hollywood “musical.’ Amid all the magnificence and pageantry the famous story pursues interesting, if rather episodic, course. History may have been dispensed with in matters of detail. but in spirit the story has been given a beautiful recreation Tor Marie Walewska gave, and inspired in Napoleon, the only real and unselfish love of his life Miss Garbo and Mr. Bover give the characters an illuminating porMost patrons, I believe, will note a “new and improved” Garbo, Her performance has more vivaeity versatility, ‘There are less of doleful mannerisms which she has used and used again. In addition, her English (at this late date) seem: to have shown a considerable improvement.

Napoleon Is Human

Mr. Boyer is a satisfying and helievable Napoleon. This is consicderable praise. Many actors on stage and screen have succeeded in looking like the Little Corporal, but few have made of him a human being. And the Napoleon of “Conquest” is a very human person indeed-—star-tingly so sometimes The First Emperor's soldiering Is largely inferred in the present Alm. We find him only once on the battlefield. and that in a rather unnecepisode anent the retreat Moscow Waterloo is skipped completely. ‘We see him, rather, as a man and a lover, The picture opens with a wholesale destruction of beautiful stage properties when the Cossacks raid the palace of the aged Count Wa‘ewski and his voung wife, Marie

HOLLYWOOD, Nov, 11 (U. P).— The daughter of John Gilbert and Leatrice Joy had $10,000 of her late father's film fortune in the bank today as she followed her mother’s footsteps in the movies. Leatrice Joy Hook, former wife of Gilbert, and once a star of the silent films, appeared in court with her namesake daughter, Leatrice, 13, to be appointed the girls’ legal guardian. This ‘was necessary So that the daughter could inherit $10,000 of the $250,000 estate left by Gilbert when he died in January, 1936. The mother, S. Hook. a businessman, was authorized to hold the money in trust. Little Leatrice, meantime, starting out with the same studio that made her mother famous. She went to work for the first time on
