STEEL PRODUCTION DECLINES IN WEEK

CLEVELAND, Nov. 8 Further curtailment of steel production last week reduced the National operating rate for the industrv 4 points to 47 per cent of capacity, but the decline shows signs of slackening and several favorable ‘developments have appeared, the magazine Steel said today. Placing of substantial tonnage in the Pittsburgh area by the Ford Motor Co. good inquiry for steel rails from Southern Pacific Railroad and taking of bids for the ex- | tension of Coulee Dam bring an aggregate of about 200,000 tons before steel mills.

RAIL ELEVATION

Decision Sought ‘on Damage Claim Based on Plan to Close Street.

A skeleton out of the past rattled Hin the City Hall today. In reality it was nothing but an out-of-the-way street on the South Side, but it is typical of the many

[City Hall problems.

In 1929, with times booming and | tiie movement for South Side track elevation being pushed the Works Board adopted a resolution closing [the Oriental St. block between Southeastern Ave. and E. Washington St. The railroad tracks run

across the south end of Oriental St,

Project Seemed Near

At that time it looked as though | the elevation of the tracks would | be completed in a few years. But then the depression came and the Board's plans were halted, However, technically, the street Residents along street, school patrons and church leaders protested and litiga-

[tion resulted, according to City Ate

torney Michael Reddington.

One of the cases even went to

| the Indiana Apellate Court and was

he said, Another, a suit brought by the owners of a warehouse for $30,000 damages because the project was halted, is pending.

Claim Sale Jeopardized

The action was asked despite the [fact that the street never was ace {tually closed—only technically by ° the resolution of the 1929 Board. The plaintiff claimed damage was | done because prospective buyers of [the property would think that sinde it was ordered closed, it might ac[tually be closed any day track elevation became imminent, Mr. Reddington has informed the Board that the warehouse owners were anxious to have a trial date set [unless it fs settled out of court. The Board has decided to “take [its chances and try the ease,” Rai Fries, Secremry, said, NAMES ALTERNATE Times Spec irrd WASHINGTON, Nov. 8—Ralph Lincoln Colby, 1102 Eugene St, In[‘dianapolis, has been designated as 'n second alternate in the entrance examinations next March 1 for adsmission to the United States Milf= [tary Academy at West Point, ‘N.
