IRWINIS TALKED TO TAKE BALLS NATIONAL POST
Muncie Man ‘Quits as G. 0. P. Commiteeman; State Heads Meet Oct. 29.
(Continued from Page One)
Republican National Chairman, and Mr. Taylor, Mr. Ball indicated he wished to resign because of his age and a desire to devote more attention to his business interests. He is "15. Mr. Ball, who has been described as the “financial angel” of the Republican Party in Indiana, has beeh a national committeeman since 1928.
Former Senator James Watson, who is in Indianapolis, said he was surprised ‘by the announcement of Mr. Ball's resignation. Mr, Watson said he might not be in line for the position even if he wanted it. The State Committee fills vacancies in the national committee for the unexpired terms of retiring members. The selection then is confirmed by the national committee. Mr. Ball's successor is to serve until delegates to the 1940 National Convention choose a committeeman. In announcing the date of the | next State Committee meeting, Mr. | Taylor reminded party workers that | he is “merely acting as a state] chairman.” Several weeks ago Mr. | Tavlor was elected chairman by the | 12 votes of the Ralph E. Gates | group. Eleven minority members | declined to vote. Mr. Taylor announced then that he would serve until he was given | unanimous approval or until both factions of the party agreed on another man.
Gains Rail Control |
Born Nov. 2, 1862, Mr. Ball won |
national prominence last year when | __
he gained control of the vast Van | Sweringen railroad empire through | an investment made prior to the death of the brothers who built the | huge property. Mr. Ball later disposed of most of his interests in this property by | turning it over to religious, chari- | table and educational foundations. Prior to 1928, Mr. Ball held no | official position in the Republican | Party. Since that time, however, ho | has been active in both the State and national organizations. Mr. Ball's letter to Chairman Hamilton follows:
Dear Mr. Hamilton:
I am inclosing a copy of a letter which I have today sent to Mr. John C. Taylor, chairman of the |. Indiana Republican State Committee. In this you will note that I have concluded that it is advisable to resign as a member of the Republican National Committee from Indiana and I do now submit to vou that resignation. 1 do this for the reasons stated in the letter to Mr. Taylor and at this time in order that the state committee may indicate my successor at an early meeting which is planned. I am so firmly convinced that intensive Republican Party activity is essential for the welfare of the nation that I desire that Indiana’s part is carried on by those who will be able to give the intensive service which the purpose warrants.
To you personally and to the

members of the national committee, I extend my confidence and assure you as I have Chairman Taylor that my withdrawal is only from the front line, Text of Mr. Ball's letter to Chairman Taylor follows: Dear Mr. Taylor: I am inclosing copy of a letter | which I am sending today to Mr. | John Hamilton, chairman Repub- | lican National Committee, in which you will note I am submitting my | resignation as Republican national | committeeman from Indiana, which position I have held since the con- | vention in Kansas City in 1928, I | assure you I have taken this action | with great reluctance because I | firmly believe that no business is more important than the business of the nation. From my majority I | have worked for the success of the | Republican Party. I have felt that its dominance in national affairs the best for the republic. I am | now as strong in this conviction as | when I cast my first vote and as |
| confident now as then that its prin- |
ciples will prevail. | The interest in the Republican | Party's affairs in Indiana is most | wholesome and proper for only |

The importance of attention to politics with the resulting attention thereby given to governmental affairs has always been significant but this has never been more certain than now. A strong, militant, honest and intelligent minority party is always necessary for good government, for there is no audit or policing of government possible in a democracy in any other way—but never was the need greater for just that kind of minority party than now, I would like to continue active in the affairs of the party, and as a voter and citizen I will continue to| work for my party as a duty to my country and myself, but as an officer of the national organization

it should be done. I am taking this action now so that your commit= tee may cause steps to be taken to select my successor at an early
