Kept Goal Line Uncrossed | By Beating Mississippi, 13-0; Cornell Toppled From Lead

Oklahoma Improves Standing by Holding Nebraska, Conquerors of Minnesota, to Scoreless Tie: Alabama Is Second.

By PAUL B. WILLIAMSON OOTBALL giants fell in a week-end of games which saw

latent strength stirred to scoring power in teams heretofore considered unimpressive. Coach Ossie Solem’s Syracuse Orangemen stepped out as the No. 1 giant killer by toppling Cornell's Big Reds from the national leadership. Oklahoma rose to hold the more highly rated Nebraska Cornhuskers to a scoreless tie, according to the Williamson prediction. Baylor, rated near the bottom in pre-season polls of Southwestern Conference coaches and sports editors, stepped out to tumble the Centenary Gentlemen, 20 to 0, thereby supporting the pre-season estimate by the Williamson system. Louisiana State kept its goal line uncrossed in beating | Mississippi, 13 to 0, and earned the top-ranking rating of | 99.8. Bernie Moore's unscored-on Tigers stand out as pos-| sible contenders in the season-end battle for supremacy.

Alabama ranks second with 94.3 after its 14-to-7 victory over Tennessee. Texas Aggies, after holding Texas Christian to a scoreless tie, are | third with a rating of 96. California dropped slightly in taking its double-header “breather” but ranks in fourth position at 95.2. The Golden Bears beat the College of Pacific, 20 to 0, and the California Aggies 14 to 0 in a Saturday aft-

ernoon stride. Others in the top 10 are: Auburn after beating Mississippi State 33 to 7—95. Pitt after a scoreless tie with Fordham—94.8 North Carolina after beating Wake Forrest 20 to 0-—04.7. Villanova after beating Manhattan College 20 to 0-—94.3. Northwestern after beating Purdue 14 to T—9%4.2. Columbia after beating Penn 26 to 6—94. Syracuse evidently toved in its first two games with minor teams. The strength shown to topple Cornell indicates that the Orangemen probably could have run up even higher scores against Clarkson and St. Lawrence in the first games to earn a rating more commensurate with their defeat of the nation's ranking team of last week. These post-game ratings represent each team’s efficiency of consistent performance to date, calculated by the Williamson National Rating Svstem. The ratings do not always indicate a direct gauge of the strength of each team as compared to all others in the table, but in general they do indicate each team's relative strength in comparison with its scheduled opponents, The final ratings of the completed season, however, should he close to a 100 per cent measure of the strength of the respective teams. The percentage figures below (right-hand column) are the most important, The listing figures (left-hand column) are for convenience | in giving the fractional differences in order. although it is expected that at the end of the season the teams will finish in their true 1-2-3 order. | Games reported through Oct. 17. {
