Short Covering Hits Mart and Issues Drop.

NEW YORK, Oct. 16 (U.

P.).—Stocks fluctuated nerv- |

ously today. Bonds were! mixed. Cotton futures firm after early gains. Stocks opened irregularly with U. S. Steel weak. Immediately the whole list turned upward, but prices turned down in the second hour with sufficient volume to cause the type to lag. Short covering developed on the decline and many leading issues came back. Wall Street was hopeful of Government aid for the market. It was impressed by the statement of Joseph P. Kennedy, foriner head of the SEC, that he favored modification of the capital gains tax, but was disappointed with Mr. Kennedy's remark that he considered the present margin arrangement satisfactory. ity continued to look for rise in freight rates, but ficiently enthusiastically railroad shares. U. 8. Steel to 685% Around the close it was near vesterday's last level. Chrysler opened at its Jow for the year of 76's, sank to 704, and then rallied to 737s. General Motors dipped below 40 into the new low ground for 1937 and met support.

LIGHT WEIGHT PORKERS GAIN 3 T0 25 GENTS

Increased Demand on Light Weights Sends Top to $11.25 in Local Yards.

Moderate Saturday supplies coupled with a good demand for light and mediumweight hogs resulted in a steady to 25 cent higher hog trade today, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Weights from 160 to 210 pounds advanced unevenly 5 to 25 cents, lighterweights and pigs showing a 10 cent upturn while heavier weights from 210 pounds upward |

held steady. Butchers scaling 160 | to 180 pounds found themselves

hogs scaling downward from this outside weight. Packing sows were scarce but demand was of narrow proportions, local Killers being out of the market for this class. Prices were quotably nominally steady at Friday's levels, when bulk good packing sows moved at $9.75 to $10.25, a few lightweights reaching $10.50.

Wheat Futures Break Sharply In Chicago Pit

CHICAGO, Oct. 16 (U. P.).—Easl« ness prevailed in wheat futures from the opening on the Chicago Board of Trade today. Principal

factor was weakness at Liverpool but reports of rainfall in the wine ter wheat zone acted as a specific bearish influence on the July cone wract, At the close wheat was 1% to 1%: cents lower, December 99's cents; corn was unchanged to !s cent higher, October 62'4 cents, and oats 's cent lower to ?s cent higher, December 30's cents. Export houses added to their holdings on the way down. Over=night export demand was somewhat

restricted. December corn was notably ahead of the rest of the market, showing [ the most substantial gains. Other | contracts maintained fractional ad- | vances most of the session. Some | selling of May was counterbalanced by local buying. Liverpool wheat closed over 1 cent lower under a surge of liquida= tion brought out by general rains in Australia and the Argentine. Millers’ inquiry in the United Kingdom was reported small. British wheat production is to be limited to 48,832,000 bushels this year, 2,500,000 bushels lower than the total last year. Normal Canadian wheat shipments to the United Kingdom surpass this figure,
