Pitt Is Likely : To Beat Rams For a Change

Panthers Pack Wallop to Win Instead of Draw This Time, Grayson Says.

By HARRY GRAYSON NEA Service Sports Editor

Fordham has most of last year's stars, two new linemen of worth, and what is supposed to be a superior backfield, yet I suspect that the Ram will ram its head into something harder than a stone wall in tackling Pittsburgh in New York on Saturday. Fordham and Pitt have played 120 minutes the last two campaigns without getting anywhere at all, but that kind of business can’t go on when Rose Bowl rompers like Goldberg, Stebbins, Patrick, Stapulis and Chickerneo charge behind forwards on the order of Daddio, Matisi, Delich and Delle Tezze. Pitt is my pick by a pair of touchdowns, TVA stands for Tennessee Valley Authority. Also Tennessee Varsity Aggregation. The Volunteers hit Ala-| bama right on the heels of the hard | knocks of the Duke debate, but | should stem the tide at Knoxville, Getting bac kand 'way down East | Yale has Frank to pass, but no opportunist like Kelley to make nutty catches, so it appears to be Army's | turn at New Haven. A good line | makes the Cadets’ running attack | quite formidable. Harvard seems to have come on | sufficiently far to repel Navy in| Baltimore. Time for Kern to Pay

Notre Dame should get even with | Bill Kern for all the fine scouting | he did against the Irish for Pitt, | but the large blond’s Carnegie Tech | array is likely to make the margin | narrow in Pitt Stadium. { Columbia is smart, but Penn's line looks too imposing in their skir-| mish in New York. Colgate has Red Chesbro at | tackle and Whitey Jaeger in the | backfield and isn't as weak as it | was made to appear by Cornell's surge, but Tulane is my choice in Buffalo. | Cornell and its great Negro end, | Holland, is likely to demoralize | Syracuse at Ithaca much as they | did Colgate. Manhattan now is capable of combatting the powers, but not one | with the potentialities of the eur- | rent edition at Villanova. They hook | up at Ebbets Field, Brooklyn. |

Dartmouth Should Win |

Dartmouth writes its own ticket | ~ against Brown in Providence. Swinging down South again, Duke dashes right into another tough one in Georgia Tech in Atlanta, bug | should get away with it. Auburn should edge Mississippi State in one of Dixie's best in Birmingham, and Louisiana State figures to repei Mississippi at Baton Rouge. Maj. Biff Jones himself stirred up much of the trouble that Oklahoma is expected to give Nebraska at Lincoln, but the Cornhuskers are an inspired outfit after their vic- | tory over mighty Minnesota and should emerge with tassels waving. | Maj. Jones left the Sooners to take command of the Huskers.

Purple Middle Weak

Northwestern is a slight favorite over Purdue at Evanston, but I 100K | for Boilermaker backs to locate | leaks in the center of the Pale) line and at least get a draw. I can’t see how Michigan can escape taking another one on the whiskers as an angry Minnesota | machine moves into Ann Arbor. Irl | Tubbs can be depended upon to do | a good job, but Wisconsin should | get over Iowa at Madison to con- | tinue its upward climb. Illinois has | enough to shade Indiana at Bloom- | ington. Arkansas has been tied by Texas | Christian, which is closer than | many expected it to be held, and | the Razorbacks have another arm- | ful in Texas at Austin. Arkansas | must be nominated, but the wvisitors will know that they've been in| a row. Favors Vanderbilt's Chances

Texas A. & M. is stronger on | paper, but I wouldn't be surprised | to see Texas Christian hold the Aggies even at Pt. Worth. Ray Morrison's Vanderbilt creation should repulse its coach's old school, Southern Methodist, at | Dallas. Tulsa always offers some- | thing more than a pink tea, but Rice is given a margin in their engagement at Houston. Howard Harding Jones has the | required material at Southern California—enough at least to turn back Oregon in Los Angeles, Ore- | gon State may make it close, but | U. C. L. A. should still be among the leaders when its quits Corvallis. Washington State is below | par, which is a poor position to ey in when playing Pullman. But, then, there is considerable | explaining to do every Saturday | night.
