HANGING COACH BUILT TO AVOID RAIL JOUNCGING

New Type Car Looks Like Plane Body on Wheels; Swings on 1 Ropes.

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 8 (U. P.).— A railroad coach that looks like an airplane body on wheels and swings on its trucks like a hammock was under construction today by the young grandson of James J. Hill, late railroad “empire builder.” Courtland T. Hill, former New York stock broker, guaranteed there will be no tilting of seats on curves, no tight upper berths, and no jounces. He said the Santa Fe Railroad would be given the first car in November, “The coach will be built of lightweight steel,” he said. “It will sit close to the rails and be guaranteed jounceless.” The 11,300-pound car will be suspended at the ends from uprights fastened to the trucks. On these it will swing from its ropes. When the train stops on a sharp curve, the suspended car will hang straight down from its uprights.

Una Merkel Pulls Worker From Water

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 8 (U. P.).— Una Merkel, blond movie star, was hailed as a heroine today for saving the life of a man whose skiff was overturned by the backwash from her fast motorboat in Arrowhead Lake. Miss Merkel was speeding across the lake in the San Bernardino mountains to a film location. Two hundred yards from shore the waves from her boat capsized the skiff and dumped Arthur Camp into the water. Mr. Camp, property man for her film troupe was unable to swim. He had gone down twice when the actress swam to his rescue. She pulled Mr. Camp to her boat, hauled him in, and hurried to shore, where she helped to resuscitate him. Carole Lombard, John Barrymore

and John MacMurray, film stars, witnessed the rescue from the shore.
