Community Chest Deadline Set for Oct. 20; 38 Charities Involved.

“It is a matter of Indianapolis civic pride.” the leaders said, “that the city takes care of her own, and it js inconceivable that those who live beyond the borderline should be permitted to suffer through any lack of generosity on the part of those who are more fortunate.” They cited the 1937 record of these agencies during which, they said, | 25,615 days’ care were given mothers and babies, and 260.445 meals and 118946 lodgings were given to the homeless. During the year 3850 destitute families were aided: there were 69,721 visits to the sick, 391.706 days’ care given children and 46,957 days’ care given the elderly. Workers attended a rally last] hight at the Claypool Hotel and were addressed by Paul O. Ferrel, Real Silk Hosiery Mills vice president and sales director.

The American Hospital Association first award for the best National Hospital Day program this year today hung on a wall at City Hospital. It was presented yesterday at a luncheon meeting in the Indianapolis Athletic Club. Albert G. Hahn, Evansville, National Hospital Day chairman, said that the public must be made more conscious of hospitals if the nation's mortality rate is to be cut. Hershall M. Tebay, Deputy City Controller, accepted the certificate for Mayor Boetcher, who is ill. Albert Scheidt, of Indiana University Hospital Center, said winning of the award was the result of the combined efforts of many people. Dr. Charles W. Meyers, superintendent, was unable to attend.

The title refers to the popular vote majority by which President Roosevelt defeated former Governor Alf M. Landon in 1936.
