MBS and WIRE Contract To Broadcast Concerts Of Indianapolis Symphony

Local and Chicago Orchestras May. Alternate on

Saturday Night Good-Music Series; Three ‘Friday Programs Set.

By JAMES THRASHER

Arrangements have been ®ompleted between Radio Station WIRE and the Mutual Broadcasting System to broadcast the season's concerts by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra from the Murat, it was learned to-

day. Although the network deal has been closed, many difficulties remain to be ironed out, Franklin Miner, orchestra manager, said today. Such details as broadcasting royalties, appearance of guest soloists on the air and arrangements with the Musicians’ Union must be taken care of ‘before the series can proceed as planned. One of each of the orchestra's 10 pairs of concerts will be aired, according to the present Mutual schedule. The first three Friday afternoon concerts, on Nov. 19 and Dec. 3 and 17, and the remaining Saturday evening performances are to be sent to the network. Dates for the Saturday concerts are Jan. 8 and 22, Feb. 5 and 19, March 5 and 19, and April 2. To Alternate With Chicago The prestige of the local orchestra and of its new conductor, Fabien Sevitzky, is evident in the fact that Mutual has chosen to put these programs in a series with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The two organizations are to be heard on alternate Saturday nights. Thus one of the country’s youngest symphony orchestras and one of the oldest are booked for the same concert cycle. Due to previous commercial com=

mitments, WIRE will be unable to carry the Saturday broadcasts locally. The station is to bring the Friday concerts to Indianapolis listeners, however, and will “pipe” the Saturday programs to the network. These latter broadcasts probably will be available here through WGN, Chicago, which is to carry the Chicago Symphony's concerts.

Gotham's Sewer Department.

EW YORK, Oct. 6—The current unpleasantness in Shanghai has had some irritating repercussions in New York City for the department in charge of sewers. Among the city’s 7,000,000 inhabitants are a number of extreme opportunists. Thus when word got around that Nippon was avid for scrap iron, these e. 0.'s looked about for saleable stock and seized upon our Sewer covers. In some reaches of the Bronx these covers are of mammoth size— about 250 pounds each—and have a market value of $5 in the mysterious marts that handle such materials. A dozen or so have disappeared and the harassed Department of Sewers is thinking of fastening them in with concrete. It refuses to take sides in the Sino-Japanese dispute. : 8 = = : ICTOR M'LAGLEN passed through town on his way to England and settled one troublesome question—the reason for his

White Horse Troop on the West Coast. The radicals have held the big fellow up to scorn for some time as a bemedaled Fascist with dictatorial leanings. McLaglen says he has no plans to take over the nation at any time. His troopers are just a bunch of good-humored fellows who like to ride and wear uniforms and he sighs that it’s a shame a bucko can't do that without incurring the suspicion of the Third Internationale. 2 2 PECIAL RACKETS PROSECUTOR THOMAS E. DEWEY is moving inexorably toward the first actual demolition of a rackets empire outside of the brainstorm of a Hollywood scenario writer. With Lucky Luciano in jail for a 40-year stretch and Lepke Buchalter and Gurrah Shapiro fugitives, Dewey has but to prove his charges against Max Silverman and capture J. Richard (Dixie) Davis to accomplish the most brilliant coup in American criminal history. Lepke and Gurrah are a couple of immigrant boys who stepped off the boat into strong-arm work. They are fabulously wealthy, according to best reports. “Lepke” is a corruption of the Russian for Louis and «Gurrah” is the way Shapiro pronounces “Go away.” Silverman is alleged to be one of the “Big Four” that held the city in a steel grasp. But the most romantic figure of all is Dixie Davis. As counsel for the late Dutch Schultz, dapper Dixie was a stencil of a moving picture underworld lawyer. Dewey thinks he knows more about the city’s racket set-up than any living man—if he is still alive. He has been a fugitive from an indictment since early summer. 2 8 = HUROK, the moon-faced impre- .. sario who likes to gamble on foreign talent, stepped off a boat the other day, happy that an American phenomenon has taken root in Europe—and died off here. ROADWAY Hurly-Burly: Edna Ferber spends most of her luncheon hours these days with Janet Fox, a young and promising actress. Funny Coincidence Department: That Henry Fonda, skipper of a seaworthy boat in “Blow Ye Winds,” the new nautical play, should have been skipper of the schooner which had to be rescued on the Long Island Sound the other day. With disappointing publicity results. Constance Cummings probably will be the most clothes-ridden actress of the new season. She has 13 costume changes in “Madame Bovary.” . Tony Canzoneri will turn Broadway ticket broker shortly.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 6 (U.P)— A move to give other cities some of the famous Hollywood premieres, with all the gaudy trimmings, was started today by Paramount Studios. The picture, “The Barrier,” will open in Seattle Oct. 29 in the first of the series of premieres to be staged in key cities, complete with movie stars in person, microphones, formal dress and floedlights. Other premieres are planned for San Francisco and New Orleans.

Byron Mowdy To Teach Here

Byron Mowdy, teacher of singing and a former Indianapolis resident, has returned here from New York and established studios at 309 Marion Building. : Mr. Mowdy, a tenor, is a graduate of the Metropolitan School of Music, now the Arthur Jordan Conservatory, and taught there following his graduation. For several years before going East he was soloist at the Second Presbyterian Church and choir director of the Meridian Street Methodist Church. In New York, Mr. Mowdy studied with Herbert Witherspoon, Charles Albert Baker and Dr. William C. Carl. He appeared in recital and oratorio as well as serving as soloist in several New York churches.

Writer Is Denied

| - Star's Pay ‘Cut’

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 6 (U. P)— Agents who got 14-year-old Deanna Durbin her first job as a singing movie actress refused today to split their commission with Mrs. Live White, the writer who first brought Deanna to their attention. Jack Sherrill and Frederick Falkin, the agents, filed an answer to

L a suit brought by Mrs. White for

a share of their commission. While admitting that the writer might have “discovered” Deanna, they denied having promised her any split in their share of the young star’s earnings.

Windsor's Teacher in Lopez Band

Drummer Gave Tips to

Duke in London Night Club.

Vincent Lopez, who brings his orchestra to the Indiana Roof tonight, probably is the only band leader Ww! boasts among his entertainers a blind whistler and and a drummer who once taught the Duke of Windsor. : Johnny Morris is the drummer, and he’s not the little boy who advertises cigarets on the radio. He began teaching his royal pupil (then Prince of Wales) a month after joining the Lopez band. Lessons were given at Londons Kit-Kat Club. That was one occasion when the

teacher, rather than the pupil, was |

“scared to death.” Before joining the Lopez outfit, the singing drummer had played in the same band with Rudy Vallee in New Haven, at the outset of his professional career. Later he worked in the Capitol Theater orchestra in New York, where his present employer heard and signed Fred Lowery, the whistler, came to the Lopez band by way of the Vallee radio program. He had learned to whistle while attending the Austin, Tex. Institute for the Blind. With little thought of cashing in on his ability, he had an audition at a Dallas station and soon was placed on the air as a regular feature. He is now in his second year with the orchestra. The Indiana Roof engagement of Mr. Lopez and his entertainers is for one night only.
