FARMERS URGED TO SOW WINTER WHEAT AT ONCE

Plant Now and Avoid Crop Damage From Fly, Abbott Says.

Marion County farmers should begin sowing winter wheat today and tomorrow to avoid infestation by the destructive Hessian fly, County Agricultural Agent Horace E. Abbott warned today. He urged farmers to adhere strictly to the warning as, he said, damage to next year’s wheat crop will result otherwise. “We are making this urgent warning,” Mr. Abbott said, “because this year’s harvest disclosed a 14 per cent insect infestation in the wheat,

Dates Carefully Determined

“The dates recommended are based on hundreds of sowings made in different parts of the state during the last 15 years by the Purdue Agricultural Experiment Station,” Mr, Abbott said. - “These surveys have shown that, whether the fly was present or not, sowings made on or within two weeks after the safe dates averaged a bushel an acre higher in yield than the sowings made during the two weeks before the safe d

Mr. Abbott also said that present conditions definitely warrant urging growers to adopt all practices to reduce fly abundance and destructiveness. These, he said, include use of good seed bed, good seed and proper and adequate fertility. “Plowing under of all old wheat stubble and surface cultivation to destroy volunteer wheat also should be practiced to cut damage from the Hessian fly,” he concluded.
