RETAIL SALES UP 7 PER CENT, REPORT SHOWS

62 Indianapolis Firms Enjoy 11 Per Cent Gain Over 1936 Period.

Retail sales of 62 Indianapolis firms during August were 7.9 per cent greater than during July and 116 per cent greater than during August, 1936, according to a monthly report issued today by the Fed-’ eral Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce. ||“ The report showed that the re- | tail sales of 521 reporting independent stores in Indiana during August averaged 10 per cent more than for the corresponding month a year ago. Without adjustment for seasonal influences, August sales throughout the state were about 3 per cent greater than auring July, the veport said. 2

26 PER CENT CUT IN FARM DEBTS CITED

Adjustment Program Report Made for Two Years.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 (U. P).— Farm. Security Administration officials said today that debts of 62,099 farmers were reduced $51,423,010 or 25.2 per cent during the two years ended Aug. 31 through the voluntary farm-debt adjustment program. . The debts were scaled down from $203,876,204 to $152,453,194, enabling payment of more than $3,680,000 in taxes,"they said. The program was carried out through mutual agreements between debtors and creditors upon recommendations of voluntary farm-debt adjustment. committees, which were assisted by the Farm Security Administration. : Of the cases, 36,000 were outright - debt reductions, 16,052 were extensions of time for payments, 950 were substantial interest rate cuts, 4576 were a combination of these methods and 3921 were “unclassified methods.”
