Junior Weatherman’s 3d Book, ‘Felicita,” Is One He Likes Best

Today the weather was forecast

as “probably cloudy” and that had

something to do with Robert E. Spencer, for he is junior meteorologist in the Indianapolis Weather Bureau office. Today, also, Bobbs-Merrill published Mr. Spencer’s third book—the one he likes the best—a fantasy of about 25,000 words, from which Bobbs-

Merrill expects big things.

The book is entitled “Felicita.”

Louis Untermeyers the poet, read the book in advance and said this

as a testimonial: “It moved me because of its genine poetic feeling—unforced, unaffected—ana because of its inner, inexplicable overtones. It is a treasure for the spirit.” Well, to Mr. Spencer it was and js the “grownup. fairy story.” By that nickname he discussed it many times, casually, with one executive of Bobbs-Merrill, when they had luncheon together.

A Welcome Call

When he finished the manuscript, Mr. Spencer sent it on to his agent in New York. Later, the BobbsMerrill executive asked to read it .and Mr. Spencer sent along a copy. Bobbs-Merrill called up. “We want ao publish that book,” . they said. And from then on things moved so swiftly that Mr. Spencer found himself correcting proofs before he had seen or signed a contract. Such brathless and headlong authorship was new to Mr. Spencer, whose other two books wandered around the publishers’ offices on regular “Gulliver's Travels” before they were accepted and appeared in print. Mr. Spencer has been in the weather business ever since a man he knew wired him at his Utah home that a position was open in a ‘West Coast station. He took it. He had just been mustered out of the Army after the World War,

Writes at Home

He writes nearly every night at home, he says, and finds that writing is more than a hobby, “because it is so absorbing.” Since discipline ‘and accuracy are essential to Weather Bureau work, he said, they fit admirably into his writing. Mr. Spencer already is at work on | another book.

RURAL AID WORKERS HERE FOR PARLEY

Thirty-five state and district Farm Security Administration workers engaged in supervising rural rehabilitation. programs in- five states today were continuing their threeday conference at regional headquarters here. The workers yesterday began thelr discussion of rehabilitation problems with Washington and regional officials. Milo Perkins, assistant FSA administrator, and Phillip F. Maguire, Rural Rehabilitation Division director, both of Washington, were expected to attend the conference today.

DAHL’S WIFE FEARS | FOR HIM IN TRIAL

CANNES, FRANCE, Sept. 30 (U. P.) —Mrs. Harold E. Dahl, attractive wife of the American aviator captured by the Rebels while flying for the Loyalists, was distraught today over reports that her husband must face a second court martial on charges of rebellion, If Mr. Dahl, a former Butler University student at Indianapolis, is convicted, he probably will be shot, although earlier reports had been received from the Salamanca Rebel base indicating he would be among the first prisoners to be released in an exchange between the Loyalists and Rebels. “I knew nothing about it,” Mrs.

Dahl sobbed when informed of the new trial. “I had a letter from my

husband recently but he mentioned |

nothing of a trial; perhaps he wasn’t allowed to.”
