Gelding Clips Three-Fourths - Of a Second From Peter Manning’s Record.
LEXINGTON, Ky. Sept. 30 (U. P.). — Horsemen today hailed Greyhound as the greatest trotter of all time. : The fleet gray gelding yesterday established beyond all question his right to this ranking when he trotted a mile in 1:56 flat to smash by three-fourths of a second the world record held for 15 years by Peter Manning. © Driven by Sep Palin of Indianapolis, Greyhound climaxed a campaign which had already given him a tie for the old world mile mark and a new record for one and onehalf miles. In yesterday’s trial Greyhound raced against time and was paced by two runners. The trotter is owned by E. J. Baker of St. Charles, Ill Another world record was on the ‘books today as a result of yesterday's sensational Grand Circuit racing. Billy Direct, winning the third heat of the $2000 Tennessee -Stake, set a new mark of 1:58 flat for 3-year-old pacers. The old record was held by Highland Scott.
Greyhound, sensational ftrotter, who yesterday set a new world record for one mile, established a new mark for one and one-half miles at the local Fair Grounds a few weeks ago, when he ran the distance in 3:021% in a race against time.
Ali Baba Booked On Tuesday Card
Ali Baba, the squatty bald-headed Turkish wrestling star who sports a handle bar mustache, formerly held the world’s heavyweight mat crown and is recognized as one of the most colorful grapplefs in the game, headlines the Armory mat hill next Tuesday night. Ali, who is making an effort to regain the high post he once held, agreed to face any opponent named by Matchmaker Lloyd Carter and the latter has chosen the powerful Rube Wright, of New York, for the opposition, Wright, undefeated here in five starts, scales 245 pounds and is a “six footer.” Baba weighs 203 and will stand at least 12 ‘inches shorter than his rival. Carter also reports that the / sensational jujutsu exponent, Shiniki Shikuma, 205, of Japan, will return after a long absence for a special semi-windup. The tricky and speedy Shikuma met Everett Marshall twice here last winter, losing the first encounter on a disqualification and held Everett to one fall in 90 minutes on the second occasion.
Dixie Series Under Way at Little Rock
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. Sept. 30 (U. P.).—The Little Rock Travelers prepared to play the Ft. Worth team, champions of the Texas League, here tonight in the first of seven games to determine the Dixie baseball championship. The Travelers took quick advantage of an Atlanta Cracker blowup in the sixth inning at Atlanta yesterday to win the seventh and deciding game of the Southern Association playoff, 5 to 2.
Montague Cards 65 On Strange Course
PORT WASHINGTON, N. Y, Sept. 30 (U. P.).—John Montague, Hollywood’s “Paul Bunyan” golfer, awaiting trial on charges of participating in a roadhouse robbery in upper New York state, had four more witnesses today to his prowess on the links. Montague banged out a 65, five under par for the 6265-yard layout of the North Hempstead Country Club, in a match with Grantland Rice, Alex Morrison, veteran golfing instructor; Clarence Buddington Kelland, the author, and Dr. Leander Newman.

CROW, 2.2, DRAWS SAFETY MAN OVER, NOTRE DAME, Ind. Sept. 30.— Now that Drake has been established as a “major league” football team, Coach Elmer Layden has no more worries about his 1937 Notre Dame football schedule. The Bulldogs, he had been told, were the only really soft touch on his nine-game schedule, although he was never heard to subscribe to this opinion. - The Bulldogs will open Notre Dame’s 50th season of football here Saturday before a crowd which should reach 35,000 or more, including the boys and girls who will be guests of Notre Dame. The Drake ‘Bulldogs, Layden knows, are an experienced, polished football team. They breezed through their opener, 47 to 0, with Central College. Drake has @ veteran team, which was second in national scoring with 268 points. 2 Last Friday, however, Coach V. J. Green saw his men trample a strong Washington U. eleven, 32 to 2. Washington held Notre Dame to 14-6 last year, and lost to Drake by only 20-18. Washington lost only a handful of men by graduation, and the only conclusion to draw is that Drake is more powerful than it. was a year ago. So Layden has stopped worrying. He knows now that Drake can take its place with any of Notre Dame's

RA weather and a wet field failed to stop Ohio State’s passing attack as the Buckeyes defeated Texas Christian, 14-0, at Columbus, and the above play helped bring the first defeat the Horned Frogs ever have suffered in an intersectional game. Midway in the third quarter, leading 7-0, and with the ball resting on the 38-yard line, Ohio lined up in an unbalanced formation with the strong side

Yanks Favored but Giants Are ‘Very Hot’ And May Spring Surprise,
By JOE WILLIAMS Times Special Writer NEW YORK, Sept. 30.—Betting men like to support hungry fighters and hot ball clubs. Hungry fighters are desperate, know no fear, take gambling chances. Hob ball clubs are not so easy to explain. Suddenly they start doing everything right, everything breaks their way, they : can’t lose. ; The Yankees will be a 2-to-1 favorites over the Giants in the World Series for the fundamental reason they are the strongest team in what appears to be a stronger league. Yet the Giants will not lack support. Particularly at theseodds. They om. are a hot ball club. Williams Everything is breaking for them. Even the Giants’ bad luck turns out to be good luck. When a regular is injured the replacement proves to be better. , Every change that has been made in the lineup was dictated by ‘necessity — and without exception the club has profited therefrom. This has created a feeling in the dugout that the team can’t lose. At the moment the Giants are definitely a hot team, and hot teams can be very dangerous. The Boston Braves of 1914 were hot and they chased the famous Athletics right out of the park, winning in four straight. The St. Louis Cards of 1931, paced by the sizzling Pepper Martin, were a ball of fire and once again it was the Athletics who felt the blistering effects. The Giants are coming up to the series with a maximum of steam in their boilers. They have become so accustomed to having every new experiment, every new adventure succeed, they are likely to be so relaxed and so confident they may outdo themselves in the field and at the bat. If they should start out by getting the breaks they probably will go on to win. In a short series the breaks are always important but in the instance of a team that has fattened

Kabealo, taking the ball from Rabb, dropped back, waited a second or two until Ream and Crow, Buckeye ends, had drawn the T. C. U. secondary out of position, and then shot a pass across the other side of the field to Miller, who took the ball on the dead run and sprinted 20 yards for the score. :

for weeks on fortunate turns and twists, the breaks can become all conclusive. So many of these playoffs have been decided by the unforeseen and the unpredictable it is stupid to discount their possible effects on the final result. Two Giant teams of the past suffered from unbelievable incidents. The 1912 team lost to the Boston Red Sox because Snodgrass
dropped a fly ball in the outfield
and Meyers, the catcher, and Merkle the first baseman, let an easy pop foul get away from them. In an ordinary game these men would never have been guilty of such juvenile lapses, but in a World Series game, with the tension on, something happened. ’ Even more incredible was the fate of the 1924 Giants. Never before in the series was the unpredictability of baseball so heavily accented. The Giants were defeated by the Washington Senators when Hank Gowdy got his foot tangled in his catcher’s mask, and when a pebble in the third base sector caused a ball to bound over Freddie Lindstrom’s head for a base hit. Naturally there is no way to anticipate these things in attempting to dope out what may happen in a World Series. But somehow they usually happen to the benefit of the hot team or the underdog. Anything Can Happen
The gospel of the game is that anything can happen in ga short series, and there is no dearth of supporting testimony. Just the same when the games are played in an orderly manner, with no excess of bizarre episodes — such as catchers stumbling over their masks — the team that should win usually does. As a matter of fact the series as a rule runs pretty true to form in point of results. The team with the better pitchers, the better hitters and the better fielders is always the one to string along with, because in the end it takes a plethora of bad breaks to overcome superior skili. No other club has demonstrated this so emphatically as the Yankees.

other nine opponents, and he can feel free to predict that the Irish will probably lose ‘em all. Coaches Billy Cerney and Chet Grant, Notre Dame assistant coaches who scouted the Bulldogs against Washington, returned with glowing accounts of the speed of Bud Suter and Bobby Underwood, halfbacks of Notre. gio’s bat. It was one oi the memorable stops of World Series: history. To DiMaggio, it was a bad break to be robbed of a hit that might have won the game; but on the other hand it was a marvelous stop by the talented Whitehead — and that’s what he’s out there for. But the main point is the team that should have won finally did win, and it wasn’t far from a four-game sweep. Admitting the Giants are a hot team, they still don’t figure to beat the Yankees on form—and, as I have said, form asserts itself more often than not in the play-offs. Any National League team must go into the World Series at a disadvantage, the disadvantage being that it is facing the strongest team from a stronger league.

Indiana Tries,

Reserves a Worry as Team Prepares for Gophers.
BLOOMINGTCN, Ind. Sept. 30.— With the final hard scrimmage of the training season behind them, Indiana’s football team today settled down to mastering new offensive formation for use in their Big Ten opener Oct. 9 against Minnesota. Coach Bo McMillin announced that no practice game will be played
Saturday, when Indiana has an’ n date, but that the varsity will /hoid two workouts devoted to checking over defensive tactics. = Practice earlier this week included defensive work against Minnesota formations as demonstrated by the reserves. Because Minnesota will outman the Hoosiers almost three to one at every position, Coach McMillin is giving especial attention to the replacements, trying to build up reserve strength to stave off the Gopher powerhouse. Indiana’s biggest problem is at guard, with Jim Sirtosky and Joe Szabo on the sidelines with injuries. John Olmstead is handling the ascignment at present and James Lo-

the first game, allowing nine hits, and became the first rookie to win 20 games in his first season in the majors since old Grover, Alexander won 28 in 1911 in his first year with the Phillies. The Phillies checked the Giants in the second game, 6-5, called in the eighth on account of darkness. Wayne Lamaster handcuffed the Giants until the eighth, but lost a shutout when Terry's men put on a five-run rally featured by Jimmy Ripple’s homer with two mates aboard. . Continuing their dizzy finish the Cubs won their fourth straight by trimming Cincinnati, 3-0. Tex Carleton scattered seven hits to best Gene Schott for his 16th triumph, A walk and singles by Galan and Stainback scored the Cubs’ first run, and Demaree’s single and triples by Cavarretta and Galan accounted for two more in the ninth.
