ELECTRIC EQUIPMENT SALES HOLD STEADY

Fall Trade to Compare Well With 1936 Volume.

NEW YORK, Sept. 29.—Sales of

volume, and the latest appraisal of business indicates that fall trade in this line will compare favorably with that of a year ago, Electrical world said today in its weekly review. Retail sales were reported holding above 1936 figures, while manufacturers, with good backlogs, are continuing high operations. A single disappointing spot in the trade is the lack of new building construction orders, the trade publication said. “Developments scarcely can be called excellent,” summed up the review, “but actualities and potentialities are of such a nature as hardly to warrant pessimism currently shown by the stock market.” In the immediate outlook it was reported that utilities are rushing rural line construction before winter sets in to retard work and several new generating plants have been planned and are shortly to be built.

BROKERS’ OPIN (ION

NEW YORK, Sept. 29 (U. P.)— Brokerage opinion today: HORNBLOWER & WEEKS—An irregular extension of the recovery movement, featured by a series of ‘alternate minor rallies and declines during the next week or 10 days, would be more indicative of a sustained resumption of the uptrend than would a straightaway advance at this time. A movement of the former type is to be desired in order to encourage investment accumulation, rather than buying of a purely speculative nature, thus laying a strong foundation for a sustained reversal in prices, lasting from six to 10 weeks.

REDMOND & CO.—Following a short period of consolidation and irregularity around current levels, we would expect the market to continue its recovery beyond the minor technical limits reached in yesterday’s trading rally. FRAZIER, JELKE & CO0.—We think stocks now are in an intermediate rally in a bear market and that this rally is likely to extend further, but until there is more convincing evidence of a change in the longer pull trend, we would confine all purchases to a trading basis.

W. L. LYONS & CO.—If selling holds off, as it did yesterday, for a short time longer it may be that the professionals will once more take heart. ATKINS, HAMILL & GATES— When the public recognizes the significance of the new movement another violent inflation scare might be witnessed.

MEDIATOR RENEWS EFFORTS

CHICAGO, Sept. 29 (U. P.).—Dr. William Leiserson, Federal mediator, returned to Chicago today to renew his efforts to avert a nationwide railway strike threatened by 300,000 operating employees who want a 20 per cent wage increase.

PORKER PRICES STEADY AS TOP REMAINS $12.25

Vealers Advance $1 as

Spring Lambs Decline 50 Cents.

Sharply curtailed arrivals of hogs gave a steadying influence to the local trade today, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Some of the other leading points reported further losses and the fresh pork trade generally continued downward, but supplies here were absorbed readily on an unchanged basis. This kept the top at $12.25 on choice 210 to 225-pound weights. Common and medium lightweight steers and yearlings continued to move sluggishly and further declines of as much as 25 cents were uncovered. This put prices in extremes 50 cents beiow the close of last week. Strictly good and choice and prime kinds, however, were fully steady. Choice to prime around 1050-pound long yearlings cashed at $18 and there were ther steers of the same weight at $16.75.. Most of the crop turned at $10 to $14.50, with the usual quota of common kinds downward to $6.50. Despite further losses in dressed values, the vealer market took a turn-about-face today and shot upward $1, recovering Tuesday's downturn. Shipper competition was largely responsible. .- Good to choice vealers moved at $11.50 to $12, with most mediums $9.50 to $10.50 and lower grades downward to $6.50. Another substantial reduction in eastern dressed lamb values took additional toll of live prices, spring lambs declining fully 50 cents. Some unfinished offerings sold at more loss. Good to choice ewe and wether springers bulked at $9.50 to $10, with medium fleshed lambs from $7.50 to $8.50 and thin lightweights as low as $4.50. Slaughter ewes held unchanged to $2 to $3.50.

Wheat Eases

Fractions as Corn Declines

CHICAGO, Sept. 29 (U. P.).—All grains were lower today on the Chicago Board of Trade under

leadership of wheat.

At the start wheat was 1% to % cent lower, corn was 4 to 12 cent lower and oats were unchanged to 1; cent lower. Liverpool was higher at the start but the strength of the English market was without early influence here. - Winnipeg turned easier and the selling in the Canadian market brought out further selling in Chicago. There was little news of interest to grain traders and most operators were content to stand on the sidelines and wait for further developments. Corn was a half cent lower on brisk selling early. Commission houses led the bearish activities.

FINAL DIVIDENDS SEEN UNDER "36

Business Letdown Expected To Keep Payments Below Year Ago.

NEW YORK, Sept. 29.—Year-end dividends, despite the excess profits tax, probably will not flow this season in the spectacuiar volume they did last. year, many in Wall Street estimated. The slow-down on general business, it is being assumed, headed off possibilities in that line. Instead of paying out hard cash, many companies, it is said, will clear off their surplus profits accounts by issuing to stockholders either preferred stock or debentures. Still others, it is believed, will elect to pay® the high tax and keep all of their surplus that they can. Furthermore, nearly all companies have been running higher on their interim dividends this year. In 1936, dividends were held back in a persistent hope that the excess profits tax law would be amended in the last month of the year. United Business Service, of Boston, commenting on this situation, held that while nothing like last year’s flood of extra dividends will be in evidence this year, the total amount to be paid to stockholders in the final quarter -will still be “a very substantial amount.”

WORKERS FEEL EFFECT OF LESS

Operating Rate This Week Is 2 Points Under Previous Period.

NEW YORK, Sept. 29 (U. P.).— Some steel workers have been laid off as the steel operating rate dropped to 74 per cent of capacity, the magazine Iron Age said today pointing out that labor is beginning to feel effects of the reduced output.

two points under the previous week and companies are still adjusting schedules to the reduced volume of new business. “Steel mill labor is beginning to feel the effects of reduced operating schedules,” the Magazine said. “The first adjustment was the elimination of overtime, but in some departments hours have gone below the standard of 40 a week. Most of the large producers are ate tempting to stagger work, as they did during the years of low operations, while in some smaller plants men have been laid off on a seniority basis. Car builders have laid off men in an effort to spread out their remaining work over as long a period as possible. “The steel trade is virtually a unit in the belief that the extreme

customers is being overdone; they attribute the lack of confidence largely to the recent stock market slump, together with the uncertainties as to administration acts and policies and to labor agitation. For example, the slowness of some of the principal units of the automobile industry to buy steel in conformity with their prospective fall manufacturing : programs is attributed in part to fresh labor disturbances in the Detroit are and the failure of General Motors and the United Automobile Workers Union to reach a final agreement.”
