CITY JOBS AND PAY INCREASE
As Whole Static August, I. U. Says.
Times Special BLOOMINGTON, Sept. 28.—While Hoosier industrial activity as a whole remained unchanged last month, employment and payrolls advanced in Indianapolis, according to the Indiana Business Review released today by the Indiana University Bureau of Business Re-
in
increased 1.2 per cent and payrolls gained 5.5 per cent, according to the survey. Figures showed, however, that as employment gained in manufacturing plants, it declined in the nonmanufacturing group. Moderate increases were reported in the sales of Indianapolis department stores as well as for wholesale drug and grocery firms. «
Bank Debits Decline
Bank debits to individual accounts in Indianapolis, according to the review, declined 17.7 per cent during August, in line with seasonal factors, but were 9.2 per cent greater than those of the corresponding month last year. The value of building permits issued in Indianapolis during the month was 5.7 per cent. below the July figure, but more than double the figure for August, 1936. : The Review cites that employment
were improved slightly during the month. Wholesale prices continued to decline and sharp decreases occurred in the prices of many farm products in the face of abundant harvests. Livestock receipts showed:' more than the usual seasonal increase and were 29 per cent above those of August and 9.8 per cent above those of August last year. Steel ingot production, the Review says, remained at approximately 86 per cent of capacity. Pig iron production advanced.
