CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. Sept. 28 —It’s fun to play football at Wabash. Elsewhere the game may be played with deadly seriousness; many colleges would swap the administration building and give a mortgage on the million-dollar stadium for a couple of rangy ends. But over in Crawfordsville the outlook toward football is decidedly
radult and likely to remain so.
Wabash, of course, is not the only college that puts emphasis upon scholastic attainment rather than gridiron supremacy, but it is conceded generally that the Crawfordsville school ranks among the all too few institutions which would rather turn out a couple of top flight A. B.’s than the same number of All America H. B.'s. DePauw’s pretty you know. Football at Wabash is strictly a game. It is not minimized. It is

headed by W. Sullivan’s 575. Fox's Jail House registered a triple victory and F. J. Curran Insurance and Mull’s Place won twice. Gil Smith hit for 612 to top the South Side Merchants League at the Central Alleys while H. Lawrence got away to a 257 start for 601. Hether Coal made a clean sweep and Robbins Market and Stahlhut Jewelers captured two games. In the Omar Baking circuit, also rolling at the Central plant, Fischer led with 508. City No. 1, Rolls, City No. 2 and Bread came through with double victories. The Court House League at the Pennsylvania Alleys was paced by Hungate’s 595. Township Assessors and Burford Assessors turned in shutout triumphs and H. O. L. C,, Highways, Treasurers and Surveyors
~ won twice.
Adams rolled a 563 to head the Kroger Grocery League and Eppen hit for 471 in the Stewart Radio girls loop which also competed at the Pennsylvania drives.
9 BUTLER HARRIERS
SEEK TEAM BERTHS
Led by Capt. Milton Weiner, nine of Butler’s cross-country candidates are conducting daily workouts for the initial meet with Wayne University of Detroit here Oct. 9. Local boys who are trying out for the team under Coach Larry Holmes, are George Richardson, Rolia Burghard, Gene Roderick, Dick Vogel, John Carr and James Stewart. out-of-town candidates are Weiner, Perth Amboy, N. J.; Bill Southworth, Anderson, Ind.; Wray Stickford, Fountaintown, nd, and Michael Fox, Columbus, O.
BARBARA TAKES BOUT
CHICAGO, Sept. 28.—Johnny Barbara, South Bend welterweight boxer, won on points over Frank Sagilio, Chicago, in eight rounds here last night. Pete Lello, Gary . featherweight, was awarded the decision in an eight-rounder with Harvey Woods, St. Paul.

not glorified. No pressure is brought to come out for the team. If students have the time, and their studies don’t interfere, well and good. But if studies are to suffer—then football goes by the boards. The alumni, too, are well-behaved. We have it on pretty good authority that if things happen to go wrong the old grads take it in stride and even if the setback comes at the hands of a traditional rival the extent of their emotions is expressed by a shrug of the shoulders or possibly—if they feel deeply humiliated—a soft-spoken “So what?” You see, it’s a man’s school. A coach’s Paradise? Possibly. Pete Vaughan has begun his 15th year as mentor of the Wabash gridiron destiny and a glance backward reveals that his teams have been fairly consistent winners. Two Veterans Hurt
The outlook for this year is problematical. The defeat by Illinvis College occasioned no surprise, nor were any tears shed. Vaughan confided last week that he had heard Illinois was pretty tough and his boys might not get over that first hurdle. Well, they lost, and Wabash looks ahead to Hanover, to Franklin, to Butler, to DePauw and if there is to be any worrying at all there is sufficient grief ahead without looking backward. Get the idea? One thing that happened in Saturday’s game does cause concern, however. This was the injuries to Joe Gruca, star halfback, and Eugene Wahl, regular center. Both are veterans and if they are to be lost to the team for any length of time the Wabash record may suffer. Replacements are a real problem at Wabash. Coach Vaughan had 15 lettermen from last year’s squad as a nucleus for this year’s team. Of the 31 candidates eight are sophomores, which largely accounts for that problem of insufhcient reserves. Still Wabash was able to send a veteran team against Illinois College with the exception of one end position, filled by George Gilbert. Frank Kobal holds down the other wing position capably. At the tackles there are Burwell and Novosell, with Bergquist and Tauscher at guard and Wahl at center. The line averages about 185.
Pack on Sidelines
In the backfield are Ed Marciniak, 8 capable punter; Joe Gruca, an elusive young man who can pass and comes in handy for his place kicking; Klokoski, the fullback, and
either Heimbrodt, or Kraus to call |
the signals. In reserve are Ed Cooney, who did some nice work a year ago, and is expected to do more of the same this year, and Jack Nordman and Harry Rutledge, both of Crawsfordville. Also be it noted Pete is yearning for the day when Bill Pack, Indianapolis, gets back into competition. Bill is nursing a bad knee and probably won't be used before the Butler game. Just naw he is helping Jim Paterson with the freshmen. - oe is Bided sd abetted this year ual by that old st Goldsberry, Rhy: Lon

been injured every season, is the No. 1 fullback. That's a vetéran backfield although it is too small for an adequate pass defense and contains no kicker of Conference dimensions. Jay Wardley, best passer and kicker on the squad, is laid up. New Men in Line The new men are all in the line. Bob Castelo, junior, right end, was the only veteran in the opening
lineup. Joe Klemp, end; Will Cra-
mer and Jim Reeder, tackles; Mel Brower and Harry Siebold, guards, and center, Jim McDonald, never had played with the Illinois varsity before Saturday. All but Klemp and McDonald are sophomores. Cramer is regarded as one of the greatest tackle prospects in 10 years. Zup’s nephew, Bob, may replace Klemp at an end when he recovers from a minor injury, and Bill Bennis, a senior, probably will see more service at the other. Reserve tackles

OSMAN IS STAR IN DRILL AT MANUAL
After pointing out errors in defense, Coach Harry Painter yesterday began a week’s rigorous practice by running his Manual charges through an intensive blocking and tackling drill. Outstanding in the drill was Albert Osman, veteran halfback. The Redskins journey to Southport Friday for their second tilt of the season. Southport defeated Manual last year, 32-0.
JAIL INMATE HANGS SELF WITH BIG CHAIN
Ross Hutson, 52, of 1514 Park Ave., held on a drunk charge, hanged himself in the Marion County Jail Hospital yesterday, deputy sheriffs said. He used a heavy chain torn from a window, deputies said. The body was found hanging from an overhead pipe.
