merce, the U. S. Chamber of Commerce and the International Chamber of Commerce. He was founder and president of the 20th Century Fund, organized to improve economic, industrial, civic and educational conditions; a member of the general advisory, council of the American Association for Labor Legislation, chairman of the War Shipping Committee; served as vice chairman of the executive committee and chairman of the finance committee of the League to Enforce Peace. His books have been translated into French, German, Czech and Russian. Among these were ‘More Profits From Merchandising,” “The Way Out,” and his most recent, “Successful Living in This Machine Age.” One noted book critic called him the Ben Franklin of modern business.
Filene Helped Start Credit Union Here
Edward A. Filene was active in organizing the Credit Union League
in Indianapolis and spoke often at meetings here, Leo Kaminsky, Indianapolis attorney, said today. Mr. Kaminsky was associated with Mr. Filene in establishment of the Credit Union here and in development and reorganization of the credit union movement since 1923. He recalled Mr. Filene's activity here when the 1923 Legislature passed a law permitting credit unions to be organized in Indiana. “Mr. Filene’s death came as a great shock to me,” Mr. Kaminsky said. “In addition to being a business associate of mine, he was my close personal friend.”

fender of the policies of the New| Deal, a champion of a new economic order. “We all know that money is not wealth but just a measure of wealth and a medium of exchange,” he wrote in an article in 1935. “The trouble is that we all forget it— usually at the moment when it is most necessary to keep it in mind.”

Travel His Only Hobby
He was born at Salem, Sept. 3, 1860, to William and Clara Ballin Filene. His father founded the William Filene’s Sons Co. department store, of which he was president and chairman of the finance committee. Rather slight, about 5 feet 5 inches tall, he was gray-haired and bespectacled. He took slight interest in sports and travel was his only hobby. : His championing of economic legislation to improve the lot of the average man was a natural outgrowth of his business career. Thirty years ago, has was active in organizing Filene’s Employees’ Association, outstanding features of which are the right to amend store rules, and its board of arbitration. The association now has 3000 members. Defender of Roosevelt
In an address at London before the American Chamber of Coémmerce two years ago Mr. Filene vigorously denied charges of “dictatorship” against the Roosevelt regime. “You doubtless read the American papers,” he said, “and therefore you may have beén impressed during the past two years by the widespread cry against the “dictatorship” of the New Deal Administration, which allegedly has robbed Americans of their erstwhile liberties and destroyed American democracy. “I think I know, moreover, in what way you must have been impressed; for it must have occurred to you that if there were a dictatorship in America, you would not be reading outcries against it in the American papers . ..” The list of offices, activities and honors of Mr. Filene during his energetic life were voluminous. He was a planner and co-organ-izer of the Boston Chamber of Com-
