log cabin days, Buford Cadle dis-

Mr. Cadle, Indiana Northwest Territory Celebration Commission director, didn't exactly bring trouble on himself. State House reporters are

to blame. ©

When E. M. Hawes, Marietta, O,, celebration Federal director, decided that members of the Federal Theater projects weren't robust enough for the pageant, he sent out a request for 36 men. . They were to join an ox team

caravan in Ipswich, Mass, Dec. 3,

and travel in the old trails west to Marietta, ©O. arriving at their destination April 7, 1938. En route the party was to spend several weeks at what now is West Newton, Pa., to fell trees and build boats on which they were to float down the Youghiogheny, Monongahela and Ohio Rivers. Indiana Among Sponsors The whole idea, of course, was to celebrate the anniversary of the opening of the Midwest to settlers back in 1787. The plan has been sponsored and financed by the Federal Government and the six states, including Indiana, which were created from the Northwest Territory. Most of the reporters wrote that Mr. Cadle was making this appeal for psuedo settlers. The press associations picked up the item and spread the alarm to all hamlets and cities. Then the invasion started. Singly and in squads, from factories, pool rooms and farms, the trek to Mr. Cadle’s office in the State House began. Some tied red hankerchiefs around their necks to ~ give a cowboy effect, and others exhibited tobacco plugs to show that

they had the stuff of which pioneers were made. Every mail brought new stacks of applications.

Qualifications Vary

Some boasted: “My home is where I hang up my hat, and I never wear a hat.” Or: “I am quite familiar with outdoor exposure, and also can sing.” One exhibited a resignation to fate: “I guess I could go along. I can stand almost anything.” Probably the best offer was made by the fellow who declared: “I am ready and single and can furnish my own knife.” In tones of pride two wrote: “I would like very much to go on this trip and make it a success.” “Take me. I believe I could be of use as I made A in history and sociology in school.” Where Are the Farms? Sensing there must be some great urge among Hoosiers to wear raccoon skin caps, Mr. Cadle sent along some of these letters to Mr. Hawes and said he knew he couldn't appoint all 36, but could he name four or five “for patronage purposes.” To this Mr. Hawes replied that candidates would have to fill out the regular application forms which he had sent to Mr. Cadle. Then they would have to take the matter up with O. K. Reames, pageantry director. : Now the problem is even more acute. Mr. Cadle’s secretary can't find the ‘application forms.
