JOMILLIONS IN U. S. TURN BACK CLOCKS SUNDAY

Daylight Saving Time Ends Record Year With Growing Favor.

NEW YORK, Sept. 24 (U. P).— Daylight saving, adopted in this country as a war-time measure to conserve fuel and perpetuated by various societies in peacetime to give the workingman an extra hour of daylight closes its most successful period at 2 a. m. Sunday. At that hour most of the clocks turned ahead an hour at 2 a. m. last April 25—depriving millions of an hour of sleep—will e turned back an hour, ‘theoretically making up for that equally theoretical loss. Those who like to juggle figures estimate that New York City alone will gein a total of eight centuries of sleep that night. The Merchants Association of ~ New York, one of the organizations most active in the crusade for daylight saving, today noted the great stride made in its campaign. In the United States aboyt 30 million persons were afiec by daylight saving this year.

Europe Has “Summer Time”

In addition three million Canadians and 100 million persons in five European countries—France, Portugal, Belgium, Great Britain and Holland—also observed ‘“summer time.” . “Daylight saving is more successful now than ever before,” the Merchants Association reported. “Many states had wider observance this year than last and more will join " next year. The practice has even spread to Argentina, which will go on daylight saving next year.”

Not all of the states and nations which have summer time change over to standard or normal time on Sept. 26. Most of the United States turns back the clock on that day, however, including New York State which has ten million of its residents on Eastern Daylight Time.

Campaigns in West

The most notable extension of daylight time this year was in Denver, which officially: adopted it for the first time. Vigorous campaigns for adoption are being conducted

in Reno, Nev, and San Francisco. Other noteworthy. extensions include New Hampshire where, despite a state law prohibiting the public display of daylight saving - time, the list of towns observing the new hours was so large the Legislature passed a bill in May making daylight time legal. As usual this daylight saving period brought forth its crop of oddities. The Buffalo and Niagara Electric Co. in New York State complained that the new time had cost it a total of 60,000 electric: light hours a day because approximately 30,000 families who used to stay home in the evening now hurried through supper and spent an hour out each evening.

Confusion Is Widespread

The New York Telephone Company reported last April that it had 190,000 phone calls from harassed subscribers who wanted to know what the right time was and did they have to move the clock backward or forward. Ellsworth Reming of Buffalo, a daylight town, went to Rochester,

The Rebels threatened to execute him, but- Mrs. appealed to Generalissimo Francisco Franco and his life was spared. Mrs. Dahl, the flier’s wife, was assured today by the. Rebels that her husband was safe and being well treated. “Your husband is in perfect health and is being well treated as are all of our prisoners,” an aid of Generalissimo Francisco Franco wrote

parking ticket for overstaying a zone. He explained that the change in times had confused him and the traffic charge against him was dismissed. Perhaps the most unusiial note of all came out of war-torn Spain where the Loyalist government announced daylight saving time in all its territory. This, it was pointed out, would give its troops an extra hour in which to fight every day.

Englishman Had Idea

The actual origin of daylight time is somewhat obscure, but an Englishman named William Willett was one of the first to propose it. His idea was to advance the clock 20 minutes a Sunday for six Sundays—a total of two hours. He theorized that no one would miss the two hours in such easy stages. The late’ John Anderson of Newfoundland convinced Willett ‘hat one hour was plenty. Willett has been honored by a statue in London, but there is no monument to Anderson, the modificationist. Marcus M. Marks of New York then took up the work. He formed the National Daylight Saving Association in 1917 and permitted it to lapse a decade or so later- because he said, “daylight saving is now able to speak for itself and to stand or fall on its merits.”

World War Measure

The movement not its greatest impetus during the World War when the government adopted it to conserve fuel. After two years the farm bloc in Congress succeeded in having the order revoked.’

The Merchants Association looks toward the day when the nation will be solidly on summer time and situations such as this will be impossible:

At 4 o'clock I start for Newry; For half an hour I drive like fury, Arriving there at half-past three, Which is a great surprise to me.

It probably should be titled, “The

REPORT OF FINDING CUP YACHT ‘FALSE’

LONDON, Sept. 2¢ (U. P.).—Ship after ship reported from mid-At-lantic today that no trace had been found of the cup yacht Endeavour I, and brief hope that it and its 18 men were safe was changed to deepest sorrow. A report was circulated yesterday, and “confirmed” by the authoritative Lloyd's Agency, that the British tanker Amastra had sighted the yacht at 32 north latitude, 39 west longitude, off the Azores, and that “all was well with it.” Endeavour, defeated in her challenge for the America’s cup in 1934, parted her tow line Sept. 12 on her way back to England from the United Stateg

Spring Production to Bring Increased. Supply, ~ Abbott Says.

Fewer hogs will come to the markets this fall but a considerable increase in the 1938 spring production is expected, County Agricultural Agent Horace B. Abbott said today. Mr. Abbott said it was likely the major reduction will occur during the next three months. In view of the ‘expected smaller tonnage of hogs to be marketed this fall and with the high level of consumer demand, Mr. Abbott predicted hog prices will average at least as high as a year ago. At that time the average for hogs was about $9.90 a hundred pounds. Further, . Mr. Abbott said, the larger supply of corn this fall and the resulting lower prices will leave the corn-hog price ratio in 1937-38
