| WARREN CENTRAL T RIES FOOT BALL
Ben Davis Its "Rival in First
Tilt Tomorrow
Games at Washington High
Field to Mark Debut of Giants, Too. “
By DICK PRESTON
Tomorrow afternoon at the Washington High School Stadium, Ben Davis and Warren Central are going to have a coming-out party. But there’ll be no punch bowl, no stag line, no swishy dresses. Polite conversations will be few and far between, and orchids and violets aren’t on the program. The occasion for the coming-out party is that Warren Central and Ben Davis are making their debut in the game of football. When the whistle blows at 3 o'clock, every player on the field will be awaiting a real kickoff for the first time. Warren Central is the real baby of the two in the gridiron game. Ben Davis. had a team which practiced last year, ‘although no games were scheduled, but the East Siders didn’t even get under way until three weeks ago.
Coaches Are Hopeful
Out at Warren Central, Coach Tom Stirling said his boys have already learned not to call a helmet a hat. And they're fast learning the difference between shoulder pads and a head linesman. The yknow, he said, what a tackling dummy looks like and why you can’t carry a football like a loaf of bread. Other than that he’s not so sure, Coach Stirling and his assistant. capable Phil Acker, have taught their charges a lot in three weeks, but they feel they have a long way to go. Some of the boys are developing fast. Weyman Hiner, a sophomore, is going to be a real fullback. Frank Eberhardt, junior center, also shows possibilities of developing into a top notcher.
Team to Average 155
Tomorrow’s starting lineup will average about 155 pounds to the man. Fred Bechold and Richard Willis will be the ends. Kenneth Smith and Joe Schloemer; tackles; James Poole and Clarence Proctor, guards; and Frank berhardt will , complete the line. Lawrence O’Conner, quarterback; Bill Vernon, left half; Howard DeGolyer, right half, and Wayman Hiner, fullback, will make up the backfield. This year Stirling and Acker are drilling the squad of 30 boys in fundamentals, more fundamentals, and still more fundamentals. Next year or the year after, they believe they'll have a real football team. The balance of the Warren Central schedule follows: Oct. 1—AtT Washington, Ind. Oct. 8—At Manual (night). Oct. 29—At Broad Ripple. Nov. 5—Westfield.
DePauw Ready ~ For Manchester
GREENCASTLE, Ind, Sept. 22. —DePauw University’s Tiger footpall team will open its 1937 season here Saturday afternoon against Manchester College. The Spartans were DePauw's Homecoming opponent last year and forced the Tigers to come from behind to win, 13-7. While Coach Neal has not picked his starting lineup, scrimmage sessions show end ass! gnments being shared by Sweet, Murnane, Montooth and Joe Edwards; Stoops, Gilbert, Hager and Macek at tackle, and Oswald, Merrill, Grummon and Montgomery at guard. Joe Barr has| the edge on the center -post with Gardner and Ted Edwards in reserve. In the backfield, Downey and De War, both seniors, barked the signals while Kendall, |Schiach, Longshore, Randels, and Scott shared halfback assignments. Randels had the honor of scoring the first touchdown in scrimmage earlier in the
week. Max Bartley, a sophomore |!
from Indianapolis, [is being given preference for .the fullback position.

Brown, Zaharias Battle to Draw
After an hour and a half of grappling George (Cry Baby) Zaharias of Pueblo, Colo., and Orville Brown of Wichita, Kas, wound up in a draw before 3000 spectators in the feature match of the Hercules A. C.s all-heavyweight wrestling program at the Armory last night. The Cry Baby downed Brown after 47 minutes with a reverse toe hold to take the first fall of the 90-minute time limit bout. Brown used his “Indian deathlock” on Zaharias to even matters by taking the second fall in 11 minutes, and the two battled out the remaining time to a draw. In the 30-minute semiwindup Irish Dan O'Connor of Boston drew with Rube Wright of New York City. In th eopener Jim Morris of Memphis | 35 won from Red Ry=n of Los Angeles in nine minutes.
