FLOOD PROJECT IN NEW ALBANY

Housing Authority Officials To Construct 47 Homes ‘In Safe Area.

Times Special NEW ALBANY, Ind. Sept. 17T.—

_ The New Albany Housing Authority

today studied bids for construction of 47 dwellings for families still inadequately housed after last winter's Ohio River flood. The Authority, formed shortly after the Legislature passed enabling laws, is to borrow up to $120,000 from the Federal Housing Administration to construct the dwellings. Families to occupy them will be moved from bottom lands on the river's edge, where every spring the water rises and makes them public charges, to a safe 17-acre tract. The tract was purchased with money raised by private subscription and the Authority is exchanging the bottom-land lots for those in the new addition. Dwellings are to cost approximately $2200 each. The land from which the families are being moved is being deeded to the New Albany Park Board by the Authority. This tract, which edges the downtown section,. is to be turned into a landscaped public park. The American Red Cross now has 14 dwellings for flood victims. under construction in the new addition, which the State Planning Board assisted in laying out. 2

HIDE PRICES MAY GAIN

" NEW YORK, Sept. 17 (U. P.).— Shoe manufacturers are expected to resume their leather purchases within a short time and this buying

will probably tend to increase hide prices, Claude Douthit, American Hide & Leather Co. chairman, said at the stockholders’ annual meeting.

Charles Hobson, Charlottesville, Ind. is shown above in a pose characteristic of his tomato picking ability—which is considerable. He has won the title of Indiana champion tomato picker over 21 other contestants. With the title went a $50 prize.

Mr. Holmes charged that Mr. McKamey had been secretary of the local barbers’ union for 15 years prior to his appointment to the Board. Mr. McKamey today refused to
