HANCOCK SHERIFF T0 BAR GAMBLING
Promoter of Dog Track Is
‘Taking Chance,” He Says.
Times Special GREENFIELD, Sept. 17—Sheriff Clarence Watson of Hancock County declared today that gambling “absolutely will not be permitted” at a dog racing track which an Ohioan is said to be building on Road 36, about 17 miles northeast of Indianapolis. “The promoter is just taking a chance,” the sheriff said. He said he “guessed it’s true” a dog track is being built. “Anyway, I've seen a grandstand being built there,” the sheriff said.
Sheriff Denies It’s His Duty
If gambling is begun, however, the sheriff said it will not be his duty to enforce the State’s ‘antigambling laws. “It’s up to the prosecutor,” he said. John F. Wiggins, prosecutor, said he would await filing of a complaint by a citizen, and added he thought it was up to the sheriff to investigate. Asked if there is any other gambling going on in Hancock County, Sheriff Watson said, “Absolutely not.” ——

They persecute people until the poor people take their lives.”
