BROKEN NECKS MORE COMMON
Auto Crashes Blamed for Increase. in This Type of Injury.
By Science Service CHICAGO, Sept. 17.—More peér--sons are getting their necks broken these days than in the horse and buggy era, and the automobile is responsible, Dr. H. F. Plaut, Cincinnati, told members of the Fifth International Congress of Radiology, in session here. The particular part of the neck which gets broken is the atlas, the first vertebra at the base of the skull which forms the pivot on which the skull rotates. «previously fractures of the atlas were reported among longshoremen and in gymnasium accidents,” Dr. Plaut recalled. “Now automobile accidents throw riders against the tops of cars and pitch them to the pavement with many cases of fractured atlases.” % Most of these - patients recover and are fully active, Dr. Plaut said. Fractures of the skull above the atlas are more dangerous. The atlas is not easily injured by direct violence because it is well

protected by other bones and is deeply imbedded in surrounding soft tissues. But in a head-on fall the force is directed against the weakest part of the atlas by the pressure of the skull at this point.

Guns and Liquor Promise Keep 40-Cent Cotton Pickers on Job
WARRENTON, Ga. Sept. 17 (U. P).—A War between farmers of adjoining counties over Negro cotton pickers subsided today as field
‘hands acknowledged the potentialities of loaded shotguns in preference
to higher wages and “a drink of liquor in the morning and evening.” Warren County farmers jealously guarded their cotton pickers while
farmers County searched the countryside for: Negroes to harvest their ripening crop. Warren County growers, after learning that their neighbors were offering 75 cents for 100 pounds and “a, drink of liquor in the morning and evening” to cotton pickers, convinced their workers—by firing shotguns into the air—that it would be best to remain in Warren County. “They have been tald not to get on any truck leaving the County,” Sherif G. P. Hogan said. “And

what’s more, they know that the farmers mean business. This trouble never would have started if those Glascock folks had kept the cotton-picking price reasonable. Seventy-five cents for 100 pounds
“The nicest place to run into friends,” says Ethel, is the Mirabar, where the best drinks are made—by barmen who really know the art of drink"
is just downright out of reason, Our folks are paying 40 cents and with
the price of cotton as low as it is, that’s a plenty.” Reports from Gibson, Glascock County seaf, indicated that farmers there would make every effort to bring pickers in before rain and hot sun ruins the ripening harvest.
