TRAFFIC DEATHS IN STATE REACH NEW HIGH OF 731

Seven-Month Period Shows Fatality Increase of 109 Over 1936. -

The sacrifice “of human life in

traffic accidents reached a mew

record in Indiana during the first seven months of 1937 when 731 deaths were reported to State Safety Director Donald F. Stiver.

This figure, he said, compares with

622 fatalities during the corresponding period last year. He said part

of the explanation might be found

in increased gasoline consumption which points to a greater use of streets and highways. From Jan. 1 to Aug. 1 Hoosier

motorists used 350,449,172 gallons of

gasoline, while the comparative 1936 figure was 309,444,419 gallons.

Speed Chief Hazard Mr. Stiver| said speed still is the

predominant cause of fatalities, as

shown by the fact that 90 deaths were recorded in rural districts during July as compared to 40 within city limits. 8 In January of this year there were 37 rural traffic deaths and 49 with-

in cities. During all the other months, however, more deaths were

reported on highways than on city streets, althaugh the difference was not so large as in July. The July, 1936, compatison| was 58 rural and 42 urban deaths. .

The average property damage of

each accident occurring in Indiana is $104, Mr. Stiver declared. State Safety Division records show that total property damage during July totalled $316,730.93, and ranged from $5843.09 reported on July 8 to $17,473.10 on July 25.

. Weather Accident Factor The weather was a factor in ac-

“ cidents. The| large number of fatal

crashes reported in cities during winter months are believed due in part to icy streets and reduced visibility caused| by storms. Conversly, there were seven fa-

-- talities due | to blow-outs in July,

while none were reported during the other months. High temperatures may have caused some of this tire trouble. There were 26 pedestrians killed during July, a figure which compares with the 33 reported during January and the 35 during February of this year. The largest number of rail crossing fatalities, 20, also was reported during January while the July figure was 18. With additions to force and a compre patroling danger spots in the state, Mr, Stiver said his Division is to continue with renewed effort ifs campaign to reduce traffic deaths.
