The movies are moving in to take control of: their stars’ radio activities. M-G-M is reported to have closed a deal whereby all its stars will be presented on a single series of programs. . Starting date of the programs is expected to be Nov. 4. Program times and stations are to be announced later. * : Complete yearly cost to the sponsor of the M-G-M series is said to be about $2,000,000.
Other major studios are expected to follow Metro's lead, Paramount, it will be remembered, tried a similar program last spring and announced it would be back this fall. Warner Brothers are reported to be planning a program, too. These programs are expected to deal a blow to air shows that rely largely on movie figures as guest stars.
Perhaps the Metro program will deliver to listeners one of the most adamant antiradio notables. Miss Greta Garbo has refused consistently all radio offers.

Walter O'Keefe will put his “dramateurs” through their paces in a Russian playlet entitled “Three Men on a Borscht,” or “Two Bucks to Win, Place or Walk Home,” during the Town Hall Tonight broadcast over NBC-WLW at 7 this evening. Last year when Col. Stoopnagle and Budd replaced Fred Allen at the Town Hall during vacation time, they misplaced their “see-ahead-o-graph.” Mr. O’Keefe, occupying the same program, has vncovered the mysterious foresighted device and will offer a few predictions about the coming season in radio. Heading the list of guest stars, Roy Campbell and his Royalists will sing current popular ballads. The .| Town Hall quartet will offer their version of “The Widow in Lace,” from “New Faces of 1938.”

Mr. W. Hoppe of 2152 N. 33d St., Milwaukee, who owns “Milwaukee 1614, G-859,” a carrier pigeon, may or may not be pleased to learn that his bird was dined, photographed and made over by more pretty NBC stars than perhaps any other pigeon in history and finally introduced to the radio audience during ‘a broadcast. “Milwaukee 1614, G-859” flew through an open window into .the 19th floor musicians’ room in NBC Chicago headquarters Monday and was greeted promptly and courteously by John Wolf, who plays the role of Izzy Finkelstein in Kaltenmeyer’s Kindergarten. After knocking the skin off his fingers and making several vain flying tackles, Mr. Wolf captured “Milwaukee 1614, G-859” and took him (or her) on a tour of the studios and eventually to the NBC Club Matinee, presided over by Ratssom Sherman. LR There has not been such a hubbub around NBC Chicago studios, it is reported, since Minnie, the Singing Mouse, trilled over the network. “Milwaukee, etc.” was escorted around the place by a crowd of 20 interested spectators. : . “Milwaukee” had her (or his) pic-" ture taken with Betty Bennett, NBC singer, and Mr. Wolf. Thomas N. Norton, editor of The American Pigeon Keeper, was called for advice on a diet. He advised the bird's release after its appearance on the Club Matinee. The bird, looking a little bewildered, then was released from a studio window. |
