wage scale committee of the United Mine Workers Union met around a
conference table today to discuss |:
disagreement in negotiations for a new contract. The scale committee, called into session this morning by Frank Barnhart, District No. 11's president, will make recommendations to the international executive board at Washington. If is possible the memorandum will include a request for authorization of a strike of 13,000 miners throughout the Indiana coal fields. Mr. Barnhart said today he is trying to contact John L. Lewis, international U. M. W. president, at Washington to discuss the situaon. Under provisions of the mine union regulations, negotiations for a new contract have been carried on thus far by subcommittees representing the union and the Indiana Coal Operators Association. Any action’ taken by the subcommittee must be reported to the scale committee for approval. He will sing at luncheons of the Kiwanis Club Wednesday and the Exchange Club Friday in addition to leading community singing for college and church groups this week. Mr. Campbell is chairman of the music committee of the Kiwanis International.
TRUSTEES TO CONFER ON CANNING PROJECT
Township trustees from districts where WPA canning projects are located are to meet here Thursday to outline plans for handling large quantities of apples allocated to the State by the Federal Surplus Commodities Corp. in Washington. They are to represent Vincennes, Terre Haute, Ft. Wayne, Kokomo, Anderson, Richmond, Cayuga, Sullivan, Hammond and Rochester.

To Join in Observance Tonight.
Indianapolis Jews are to join in the international observance of Yom Kippur, “The Day of Atonement,” tomorrow with fasting, prayer and services. Indianapolis Hebrew Temple services were to start at 7 tonight and continue at 9:30 a. m. tomorrow. Children’s services are to be held at noon and a memorial service from 3:30 p. m. until sundown. At Beth-El Zedek services were scheduled for 5:30 p. m. today and at 6:30 a. m. tomorrow with a children’s service at 2:30 p. m. In the United Hebrew synagogue, services were to open at 7 p. m. tonight and tomorrow from 7 a. m. until sundown. Services®in Shaare Tefillah are to be at 6 tonight and from 7 a. m. until nightfall tomorrow. Kneseth Isreal services are to be at 5:30 tonight and tomorrow from 7 a. m. until dark. Yom Kippur services start with singing of an ancient melody, “Kol Nidre,” and conclude the ten days of penitence which began last week with the observance of the Jewish New Year. While Yom Kippur, “The Sabbath of Sabbaths” is associated with no historical event, remnants of the old temple ritual still are found in modern observances. Services close with “Ne‘ilah,” or “the closing of the gates,” which refers to closing the Temple gates.
