BEER LICENSES MUST CONFORM TOU. S. PERMIT

Stricter Enforcement Is Sought by Replacement Of Present Forms.

In an effort to tighten enforcement, the State Alcoholic Beveraghs Commission today ruled that—applicants for Indiana beer or wine retail licenses must have Federal permits that provide for the sale of only those products. According to State Excise Director Hugh Barnhart, many retailers have obtained Federal permits providing for the sale of spirits, beer and wine, but have contracted with the State

to sell only the milder beverages. . In this manner, they assume they

‘are safe from Federal prosecution

and they take a chance on not being caught by Indiana authorities if they sell all kinds of beverages, he said. Sliding Scale Licenses |

The Federal .three-way license i $25 as are ‘the licenses to sell beer

and wine or wine only. The Federa} beer license, however, is only $20. State retail licenses are | based on a sliding scale according to the type of product sold, population of the community and size of the establishment. A state applicant who wanted to sell all types of alcoholic drinks must get a Federal three-way license. If he desired to sell wine only or beer and wine, he also must secure, the corresponding : Federal stamp. ‘An D: policant for retail beer only, under the new ruling, legally can have only the $20 Federal beer license. Licensees Notified

The Commission is notifying its 11 district boards by letter of this ruling, and also is giving information to new applicants. Meanwhile, the excise. police force has been ordered to notify present state license holders that they must immediately secure the corresponding Federal permits. Some beer retailers have claimed they bought the three-way Federal permits as a protection against cus-

tomers who might carry whiskey :

into their taverns. |
