AGENT TO CHECK BLOOD CLOTTING FOUND IN BRAIN

Chemists Hear Report on Thrombosis Treatment, and Fire Hazards.

By ROBERT D. POTTER (Copyright, 1937, by Science Service)

ROCHESTER, N. Y. Sept. 10.— Prevention of dreaded blood clots, often fatal condition known medically as thrombosis, may now be nearer at hand. This appears from research reported by Dr. Erwin Chargaff of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, at the meeting here today

of the American Chemical Society. The mechanism of blood-clotting is one of Iscience’s still unsolved mysteries. ‘Hemophilia or bleeders’ disease is one result of defect in

this mechanism and thrombosis is

another. : By combining a small amount of sulfuric acid with a wax-like substance found in the brain, Dr. Chargaff obtained a substance which very markedly checks the clotting of blood, he reported at the meeting of the American Chemical Society here today. The material is called cerebroside sulfuric acid, and this is the first time it has been made in the laboratory.

Sulfuric acid is also found in heparin, the most powerful anti-

the operator may know at all times the hazards present. Adoption of these measures, Mr. Jones indicated, will enable a long step in the direction of eliminating industrial and mine explosions which are costly both in terms of property and human lives.

COMES FROM FRANCE "TO INSTRUCT HERE

Miss Antoinette Billant, of the Indiana University Extension Center faculty here, is to arrive in Indianapolis tomorrow after several months’ vacation in France. Miss Billant is to give a course in elementary French at the Extension Center on Monday nights. Miss Billant is a French native and received her elementary education at Les Lages, St. Germain en Laye. Before joining the Indiana University faculty, she taught at Mary Baldwin College, Staunton,

blood clotting substance known., It was originally discovered in “the liver by Dr. H. H. Howell of Johns Hopkins University. In purified . ., form, heparin injections have pre“Vented thrombosis formation to a considerable extent in animals, Drs. C. H. Best, Arthur Charles and Campbell Cowan of tHe University of Toronto recently reported. Study of the eventual practical application of Dr. Chargaff’s latest discovery is now under way.

Fire Hazards Minimized

Nine practical measures for eliminating or minimizing the danger of explosions in industrial operations were given by G. W. Jones of the U. S. Bureau of Mines Experiment Station at Pittsburgh, Pa.

Mr. Jones recommended that the measures be put into effect as soon as possible and on as wide a scale as possible wherever danger of explosion existed. Limits of inflammability, the borderline between explosive mixtures and mixtures that will not explode, are of practical importance as well

as theoretical interest, he declared. - : McCrory Scores a Scoop!
