LABOR LEADERS ARE UPHELD BY CHURCH PAPER

Bishop Manning’s Objections To Program Speakers Are Attacked.

NEW YORK, Sept. 10 (U.P)— The Churchman, weekly Protestant Episcopal publication, will say in a forthcoming editorial that Bishop William T. Manning’s objection to the program of the Church League for Industrial Democracy at the Episcopal convention was prompted

by | “othersideness,” it was anannounced today. The Churchman said it would not publish Bishop Manning’s letter which he sent to all Episcopal weeklies protesting the selection of

speakers for the league’s forums*

next month. “In his letter the Bishop objects to the one-sidedness of the program of the Leggue,” the editorial will say. “We suspect that his real objection is to its other-sidedness.” Coincidently the Church League denied -Bishop Manning’s charges that the forum meetings: will be “purely propagandist and with more than a tinge of communism.” : Listing the scheduled speakers, the Rev. William P. Spofford, executive secretary, said that there was not a Communist in the lot. The controversy was started by announcement that Norman Thomas, leader of the Socialist Party; Homer C. Martin, president of the United Automobile Workers Union; director of the American Civil Liberties: Union, and the Rev. Reinhold Niebuhr, of Union Theological Seminary, would lead forum meetings at the triennial Episcopal convention in Cincinnati. Bishop Manning objected to them because they “all had the same ‘economie program.” “The Bishop knows well encugh that there will be no dearth of representation at the convention of both conservative and reactionary points of view,” the Churchman said.

CORN FORECAST

Bumper Year May Drive Down Prices.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 (U. P.). — Farmers and commodity market traders awaited the corn crop forecast the Department of Agriculture was. to make today with deep concern in view of recent indications a bumper crop that may drive dow prices and force up livestock quota- | tions. They have been impatient for new indications since the Aug. 1 forecast showed a sharp increase from that of July 1. Little interest was attached to the wheat forecast because most of the crop already has been harvested. > Chairman Jesse H. Jones of the Reconstruction Finance Corp., indicated the Government might be forced by the size of the’ crop to make loans on corn, possibly $50,000,000 to $250,000,000. Loans and subsidies have already been determined for the cotton crop, which the department estimates will reach 16,098,000 bales, fifth highest in history, with the highest per acre yield on record.
