DUKE'S DEFENSE “ORDER FORMED, ~ PAPER CLAIMS

Society to Protos Protest Attacks Against Honor of Windsor.

LONDON, Sept. 9 (U. P.).—The News Review was to say today that a society has been formed for the fense of former King Edward VIII, now in voluntary exile. The organization, called the Society of Octavians; will not, however, seek the restoration of the Duke of Windsor to the throne of Great Britain, it was to be said. It will, instead, content itself with defending the ex-King in the press and will “uphold his honor on all

occasions.” Membership in the Octavians is

' open to all British admirers of the

Duke, according to the News Review. The News Review article: “Perfectly loyal and cherishing no restoration aims, they (the founders) seek to silence detractors of

the former King and uphold his

honor on all occasions. “In his modest little West Wimbledon villa last week, blond, 15stone, Octavian Secretary George Whish prepared the organization’s first ‘bulletin.’ Initial plans were made for celebrating the anniversaries of the Duke of Windsor’s birthday, June 23, and his accession to the throne, Jan. 22. “After the Duke had gone into voluntary exile, the youthful Whish, who still is in his 20s and closely guards the nature of his ‘office job in the city’ decided the former monarch needed defending against slanderous attacks.

Founded Before Marriage

“Two days before the Duke’s marriage (to the former Mrs, Wallis Warfield of Baltimore, Md.) Whish with some sympathetic friends founded the society.

“The Octavians pledged themselves to keep alive the memory of ‘one who loved and served his country well in times of peace and war and whose present voluntary exile has resulted solely from his sense of constitutional loyalty.

“Already the membership has spread across Great Britain. Lynxsend immediate letters of protest replying to ‘antinewspaper articles or pronouncements. “Whish bars from membership in the Octavians’ council any .. . prominent members of any political party , « . The modest organization has not yet chosen a chairman or council officers while its funds total only a ‘few shillings’ and membership is still less than 100. “Whish said that ‘before the formation of the society approval of the ex-King had never been sought. Unfortunately it’s scarcely likely that we can do anything for him, but there’s something we can do for ourselves—we can keep our honor clear and show that Englishmen are not devoid of a sense of gratitude.’ ”

RUBBER WORKERS

END GOSHEN STRIKE

GOSHEN, Sept. 9 (U. P.).—More than 500 employees of the Western Rubber Co. returned to work today after the company agreed to recognize the United Rubber ‘Workers Union, a C. I. O. affiliate, ending a 15-day strike. The agreement was reached at a conference conducted by Max Schaffer, representative of the State Department of Labor. It also provided for increased wages and seniority rights to the workers.
