U.S. DEFLATES
‘SUCKER TRAPS IN QUIET MOVES
Federal Trade Cohrission Censors Extravagant Advertising.
-
‘WASHINGTON, Sept. 6 (U. P.).— | You can't learn to croon in 10 days, | live forever, or “pack a 16-inch arm in your sleeve.” ' The benevolent Federal Trade Commission says so. The commission has been quietly moving in to combat improper advertising and the various forms of shill games that “There's a sucker
soorn every minute.” These are some of the results: The Commission has obtained an "agreement from a Florida dentist to cease representing that artificial teeth purchased from him by mail order are better than any others or are the only means to obtain “your real individuality.” Greatest Exerciser It received a promise from a Phil- | adelphia firm to stop advertising its , muscle builder as ‘the greatest exer- | ciser made; the choice of champions {and the emblem of power; it quickly stimulates muscular growth .. . by its use one can pack a 16-inch arm in his sleeve and duplicate the | -chain-breaking or iron-bending feats cf Breitbart, Marx, Sandow, Moerki, Travis or Nordquist.” And it got assurances from a Los Angeles concern that it would no longer represent that its founder “was taught by masters of the Far East In Tibet, and is today an authoritative interpreter of the ancient wisdom” offering “a secret: method of the actual technique of rejuvenation because old age is only a chemical change which the concern is able to instruct its students to overcome.” The Commission is charged with guarding honesty—in its strictest sense—in all business practices. Under its regulatory powers it is thus able to crack down on what it considers false or misleading advertising.

Teller Ammons, numerous of Mr, Rogers’ relatives from Okla- .- homa, and a host of dignitaries will participate in the dedication of a memorial erected by Spencer Penrose, Colorado Springs millionaire philanthropist. A riderless horse will head the procession from Colorado Springs. An oversize bust of Mr. Rogers will be unveiled on fits granite pedestal at the base of the tower. The figure reevals Mr. Rogers with a faint smile tugging at his mouth and his hair characteristically covering his right eye. PARIS WORKERS TAKE HOLIDAY
Shop Girls and Taxi Men Now Frolic With High Society.
PARIS, Sept. 6 (U. P.).—France’s formerly rich Cote d’Azur, crowded with Eurepean society in winter and deserted in summer, has found a new kind of prosperity this year with the inauguration of “paid holiday” worker’s trips to the Mediterranean ports. Almost every room in Juan- lesPins, Cannes, Nice, Beaulieu and Menton, known throughout the world as resorts for royalty and! high society, is taken this summer, by the workers of Paris. Shop girls, tire factory. workers, carpenters, masons, automobile workers, taxi drivers, and others form the clientele of big hotels, as well as boarding houses. “Extra wages,” granted in the last year by France's Popular Fronf government, are admitted in Cote d’Azur hotel circles to, have saved them from a severe depression and brought about a real wave of prosperity.
Workers’ Own Idea This new wave of tourists, created within France itself, has been organized entirely by workers. The idea of “popular tourist holidays”
was first proposed by a deputy |
from the Alpes-Maratime province. His idea was to help the hotel owners and hotel workers at the same time as providing real vacations to Frenchmen who'd never before had the opportunity. of visiting France's beauty spots. In July, 1936, just after the Blum government, brought their bill for paid holidays before parliament, the “Popular Tourists Association” was formed.
Its work last summer was small, but it toiled ambiticusly and this year has won the majority of hotel owners of the formerly “exclusive” Cote d’Azur to its side.
