TREASURY LISTS 60-DAY DEFICIT
OF 352 MILLION
Receipts of $862,618,618 Top Those of Last Year: Deht Moves Up.
figures for the first two months of |
the 1938 fiscal year, showing a deficit, |
of $352,144,659, only $2,399,000 more | than last year’s at this date. Receipts amounted to $862,618, 8181 surpassing income for last year's pe riod by more than $226,000,000. Expenditures aggregated $1,214, 763,278, compared with $986,647, 461 | last year. Last year’s spending fig- | ure, however, was reduced because | net repayments to lending agencies | of $226.971,724 were used to offset | spending. There were no net repayments to lending agencies for the first two | months this year. At the same tims, the national debt figure moved to a new high at $37,045,040,598 and was destined to cross the $37,100,000.000 mark this week. Revenues are running better than $100,000,000 a month ahead of las! vear. Actual money paid out by the Treasury under the general expenditures and recovery-relief classifications 1s slightly less than last year. They totaled $1,008,000,000 to Aug. 30 of this year, compared to $1,081,000,000 to the same date last year. The deficit figure continues to run ahead of last year because it is the Treasury's custom to use net repayvments to Government lending agen- | cies, such as the Reconstruction Fi- | nance Corp. to offset expenditures. For example, if the RFC receives in refunds $100.000,000 more than it] loans, the Government's expendi- |

tures figure would be reduced by that amount. | Last year at this time, net repay- | ments aggregated $227,445,144. So far this year the Govenment has paid out $7,437,515 more than was received by the lending agencies. Hence, the $7.437,515 figure appears | as an added expenditure instead of an offset.
