FEAR OF DEATH PLOT CLOISTERS SOVIET DICTATOR
Stalin Keeps to Kremlin Apartment; Seen Only In Auto.
WEDNESDAY, SEPT. ]
(Continued from Page One)
plete with millions of scraps of paper flung from buildings (except in this case they were antifascist leaflets). | Stalin received the fliers later at the | Kremlin, | Nothing ever appears in the Sov- | iet press concerning his personai | life or that of his wife and three | children. According to Bolshevik | ideas that does not constitute news. | Recently one of my Moscow friends, | taking lessons from a Russian ten- | nis instructor, gave a lift in his car | to a youth who was going into town | from the courts. He chatted casual- | ly with the boy, but learned only afterwards from the instructor that his passenger was one of Stalin's sons. Stalin’s Life Is Simple Of all the world's great rulers! Stalin leads the simplest private | life. Usually he dresses in an unadorned military = type tunic with breeches and high boots. He dislikes dainty food, and usually eats: sparingly of substantial Georgian | dishes, sometimes nibbling at an un- | salted Caucasian roll while working at his desk. He frequently spends | from 15 to 20 hours a day at his desk going through reports and conferring with associates. | The “man of steel” has few intimates, and those are usually longtime friends such as Kaganovitch, the former saddler whose sister he married, and minister of war Voroshilov. Aside from reading, Stalin's | relaxation are principally smoking his pipe and listening to his player piano. Occasinally when old friends | are invited to his country home, he | takes a few sips of Georgian wine. | But normally he drinks little. | Much of his reading is confined to discussions of the theories of Marxism and Leninism, and books | concerning industry, agriculture, and | other subjects connected with his official position. He has no time for novels or light literature.
No Rebuke to Priests
Although Stalin once indicated that lavish eulogies of himself in speeches, press, and resolutions were displeasing, since the latest purge these continual panegyrics have reached new heights of adulation without rebuke, Every speech or factory resolution is interlarded with almost byzantine phraseology of praise for the leader. It is generally believed that Stalin | himself took the initiative in launching the present purge, especially the | inclusion of everyone who previously had relations with Trotsky’s principal supporters. But it is worthy of note that in the matter of the execution of Turredhevsky and seven other generals the normal panel of three judges was widened to include high ranking officers of the army. The mental strain of the double crisis this year does not seem to | have told visibly on Stalin. Foreigners who stood within a few score | yards of him during the May Day parade in Red Square or the air} demonstration in mid-Augusl, even | with glasses could not detect the] slightest indication of tension. And | there is no evidence that recurring rumors of his illness have any foundation.

U. S. NEED NOT WAR’
Although clashing political and social ideologies make war a great threat in the modern world, America could remain out of a European war “for a long time,” according to Dr. Hans Simons, political science professor and voluntary exile from Germany. He addressed the Rotary Club yesterday. He said European dictatorships mainly are responsible for the | tense world situation.
