U.S. SPENDING TOPS INCOME $350,000,000

Official Report on First Two | Months of Fiscal Year Due Today.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 1 (U. P).— | The Federal Government spent approximately $350,000,000 more than its income in the first two months of the current fiscal year, Treasury | ledgers disclosed today. President Roosevelt's revised bud- | get of last April predicted a net de- | ficit of '$418,000,000 for the fiscal year which began last July 1. Ad- | ministration fiscal officials, how- | ever, have expressed hope that gov- | ernmental economies combined with larger repayments to Federal lend- | ing agencies would bring the budget | nearer balance. But these hopes appeared to be | waning. Refunds fo the loan agen- | cies have not measured up to ex- | pectations. While there has been a | material decrease in recovery-relief |

Rust-damaged wheat is not entirely worthless as Seed, Horace E. Abbott, County Agricultural Agent, assured Marion County farmers today. Two ‘questions which have been asked repeatedly, he said, are: “What effect on the next crop will the present black stem rust have, and what kind of wheat can be expected from the planting of the shriveled rust-bitten seed this fall?” “The great concern is due to the fact that the present infestation of black stem rust is the first general epidemic ever to strike the county, to my knowledge,” Mr. Abbott added. The loss in wheat weight resulting from the rust attack is costing Marion County farmers close to a | $100.000. he said. | “But this is water over the dam. Old Story In Northwest.

Mr. Abhott said the rust epidemic of the black stem variety is new to [this part of the country, but that in the Northwest wheat territory, it is an old story. “They have conducted many cxperiments with rust-damaged wheat which conclusively show that it is not ‘worthless by any means,” he assured farmers in this area. The poorest wheat in the county tested about 39 pounds to the bushel. The average was around H0 pounds. Normal wheat tests 60 or better, Mr. Abbott continued. Any wheat testing in low 40s fis almost too poor for seeding, he said. However, farmers who have wheat testing 50 pounds or better can raise the test weight two or three pounds by cleaning.

Treatment Ts Suggested

Mr. Abbott suggested treating the shriveled seed with copper carbonate or new improved process known as (eresan. His prescription: Mix one ounce of the compound per bushel in a closed container and leave for 24 hours. The copper carbonate treatment calls for two ounces per bushel mixed in the same way, Mr. Abboit said. Backing wheat immediately after it is treated is permissible, he added
