Grimmen Lose Ground by Dividing Twin Bill as Terrymen Win.
LESLIE AVERY United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Aug. 30.—Rookie | Clff Melton goes gunning for his | 14th victory of the season today against Cincinnati at the Polo | Grounds, and if he bags it the New York Giants will lead the National League tonight. It is the only Na- | tional League game. Today's game will climax a drive | started by Memphis Bill Terry's | gang on Aug. 12. Since then they ! have won 12 out of 15 games and gained six games on the Chicago Cubs who held the top perch today | by half a game or .002 percentage points. {3 By dropping five out of their last SIX starts, both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates appear to be out of the race. The Cards are 72 games behind the Cubs, and the Bucs are 10 games from the top. New York held the lead for a | couple of hours yesterday after they had beaten the Cincinnati Reds, 7-2 while the Cubs dropped the first end of a double-header to the Philadelphia Phillies, 10-3. But the Cubs came back to win the second, 2-1, and thus moved back in front by a | half game. Harry Gumbert scattered eight | hits to win for the giants, while the New Yorkers collected 11. Mulcahy | scattered eight safeties to beat the |
Cubs in the curtain raiser, while Jeague championship at Riverside, | Larry French distributed a half- |

MILWAUKEE, Aug. 30.—Rex Mays, Los Angeles; Wild Bill Cummings, Indianapolis, and Mauri Rose, Columbus, O., finished in that order in the Wisconsin State Fair auto sweepstakes yesterday. Only 96 of the scheduled 100 miles were completed. Time for 96 miles was 1 hour 7 minutes 59.4 seconds.
