FAMILIES FLEE EASTERN HOMES AS RIVERS RISE

Washington, D. C., Areas Are Flooded; Ithaca, N. Y., Is Inundated.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 27 (U. P.) —— Residents of low-lying sections near the capital prepared to move back into mud-caked homes today as| Mvers and creeks, swollen to flood | proportions by five days of almost | ceaseless rain, began to recede. | Scores of families in northeast | and southeast sections of the Dis- | trict of Columbia and nearby Mary- | land were forced from their homes | during the night when the Ana- | costia River overflowed its banks | and covered adjacent residential | sections. A violent thunderstorm of almost ! cloudburst proportions, which in a few minutes added 67 of an inch to rainfall which had amounted to | 5.39 inches in five days, provided | the final surge of water which sent | the streams over their banks last | night. Police and firemen _ at least 50 families to leave their low-lying homes, and dozens of other residents left for higher | ground without assistance.

lowland area around Cayuga Lake inlet. Torrential rains which began falling yesterday sent Six Mile and Cascadilla creeks and Cayuga Lake inlet over their banks. The streams | were still rising although the rain {had stopped and the skies were clearing. Firemen, policemen and volunteers began evacuating the marooned families with rowboats. The Fair Grounds, where the fair opened Monday, was under six feet of water.

Flood Waters

Isolate N. Y. Towns ELMIRA, N. Y., Aug. 27 (U. P.). —Flood waters from rain-swollen creeks isolated villages between here and Watkins Glen today, forcing hundreds of families to evacuate

their homes, marooning railroad | trains and disrupting electric power and gas service. Rain began falling again as some of the streams began receding.

DIES AFTER ACCIDENT

WASHINGTON, Ind. Aug. | (U, P.) —Garfield Leach, 51, Mit- | chell, whose leg was crushed in a Baltimore & Ohio freight train wreck near Cannelburg Tuesday, died early today in Daviess County Hospital.
