COMMAND OVER JAPANESE ARMY

Appointment of Old Friend Of Sun Yat-Sen Is Surprise.

By United Press SHANGHAI, Aug. 26.—Gen. Iwane Matsui, a tough and wily veteran, took supreme command of the combined Japanese army and navy forces in the Shanghai area yesterday. Pausing in his direction of the] Japanese army drive on Shanghai, | he said at his first press conference that the Chinese were fighting bravely. He admitted that the Japanese had suffered losses, particularly from land mines in effecting landings. Gen. Matsui's appointment was a | surprise. He is almost as well known in China as in Japan, due to long association with Sun Yat-sen when that revered Chinese patriot was carrying out his early revolutionary activities—activities which impelled him often to fly to Japan

for safety. At one time Sun Yat-sen and | Matsui co-operated in promoting a | “Pan-Asia” movement — which Sun abandoned as the result of Chinese-Japanese conflicts. Matsui continued to preach the movement with great enthusiasm throughout China.

Patriots Distrusted Him.

Chinese patriots for many warned the Chinese peopie tha Matsui was using Sun's doctrines | and associations to advance Japan's cause in China. Nevertheless, Mat- | sui was always cordially received in | every section of the country, as he | unquestionably enjoyed Sun's per-| sonal friendship. In some quarters Matsui enjoys a reputation as a conniver and mysterv man almost rivaling that of Gen. Menji Doihara, the great Japanese "Lawrence of Manchuria.” During the summer of 1936 he was credited with urging leaders of Kwangsi Province in the southwest to attempt their revolt against Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. Although nominally the Kwangsi forces were anti-Japanese, it turned out later that they had quantities of Japanese arms and ammunition. Experts said Matsui arranged for them. Matsui also has been active among Mongolians and Mohammedans in the northwest, where alsc he has assiduously promoted his “Pan-Asianism,” directed against the Chinese National government and Russia.

F. D. R. TO PONDER STRATEGY AT HOME

By United Press WASHINGTON, Aug. 26.—President Roosevelt goes tonight to the] quiet of his Hyde Park, N. Y., country home to consider calling Congress into special session this fall for a showdown on his legislative program. The President leaves the crush of | White House routine at mid-evening | bv special train. Two other allied questions will confront him as he sits in his pine-paneled study overlooking the Hudson River. They R’ye: 1. Should he stump the country in person or by radio to crystallize the popular support he believes is behind his defeated Court program and his pending surplus crop control and labor proposals? 2. Should the newly-signed Lower Court Procedure Bill be used as a “stepping stone” to another attempt to achieve aims of his original Supreme Court enlargement plan?

LINTON MONUMENT TO FAME BUF BURNED UP

Buy United Press LINTON, Ind., Aug. 26.—Proud of | the fact that their city had been designated as the center of the United States population, Linton citizens erected a shaft to mark its Site. Appropriately enough—for Linton is in the heart of the state's rich coal mining area—the marker was constructed of coal. When a visitor expressed a desire to see the memento, a guide accompanied him to the spot and found the shaft missing. Investigation revealed that a needy family had used the marker for fuel. °
