Pilot Disarms Youthful Captor, ‘Seeking to Get Away From It All.’
By United Press HOUSTON, Tex, Aug. 19.—Jack D. Hamerly, 19, who started on a trip to Mexico with only a gun to provide his passage, was held in jail
an airplane but his expedition ended 30 miles away, near Rosenberg, where the plane was brought dowri for fuel and the pilot overpowered and disarmed him. The youth explained today that he “wanted to get away from it all.” His stepfather gave him a job three months ago driving a truck. He broke a part on the machine and his stepfather fired him and ordered him from the house, he said. He had no money but he had a pistol. He rode in a taxi to the airport and when the driver looked back for his fare he saw the muzzle of the gun. Subsequently the driver, Bill Ray, filed the robbery charge.
