BROKERS’ OPINIONS NEW YORK, Aug. 17.—Brokerage opinion today HORNBLOWER & WEEKS — with the technical position of the market somewhat impaired as a result of the almost steady advance from the low levels of Aug. 6, outside developments may be said to have hastened a normal readjustment of the gains already recorded. REDMOND & CO.—In our opinjon the market outlook remains favorable from a constructive viewpoint with several of the medium priced issues showing firm tenden- | cies against the irregular background. LAMBORN, HUTCHINGS & CO. —The market seems to be left in much the same position under which it has been laboring for weeks. Holaers of good stocks refuse to sell, particularly on price recessions, and a fair demand for investment leaders appears to continue. J. S. BACHE & CO.—Any further moderate recessions or sidewise irregularity would, we believe, do much to strengthen the market's technical position which in all likelihood was somewhat undermined by the advancing efforts of late last week.

Packing Sows—

Slaughter Pig

By United Press NEW YORK, Aug. 17.—Installment sales by retail outlets in the first six months this year rose only 94 pear cent compared with an increase of between 35 and 40 per cent last year, A. W. Zelomek, economist of the International Statistical Bureau, Inc. reported. today. Total retail sales rose 9.2 per cent over the volume in the comparative 1936 period, while regular credit sales showed a 13.3 per cent rise. Zelomek said that the volume of installment sales “is not yet dangerously large and will not become so this year, according to present indications.” He attributed the’ slowing down in expansion of installment sales to the soldiers’ bonus of last year and the widespread strikes in certain

industrial areas this year.

Local Vealer Offerings Drop Half Dollar in Active Trade.

Hog values again spilled sharply. Demand veered to butcher weights and trading took on a very uneven complexion. Compared with Monday, prices were steady to 50 cents lower, although a big end of the list showed a 25 to 40 cent downturn, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, United States Depart- |: ment of Agriculture. Weights above 325 1bs. held steady, | § but few of these kinds were offered. Light lights and pigs suffered a half | dollar townturn and even at the bréak demand was not urgent. Aside from the small “showing of choice and prime steers and choice heifers, the steer and heifer trade turned sour today. Outside demand was anything but dependable and local houses had lower ideas gen-

to sell at $15 and above were about steady with last week's close, but the lower grades now generally show losses of 25 cents. Prime 1103 pound steers topped at $16.75. There were odd head of 4-H Club yearlings at $17. Two loads of prime yearlings turned at $16.50 and there was a three-car string of 903 pound horned varlings at $15.75. As a rule a spread of $11 to $15 took the crop. Heifers topped at $14.50. Cows held steady generally, but there was a weakness on light cows. Vealers lost their favorable position compared with nearby centers as prices dropped 50 cents. Trading was active at the decline on both shipper and local killer account, with good to choice offerings clearing |g from $10.50 to $11.00. Campaigning for lower costs after last week's losses in dressed values, lamb buyers successfully enforced declines of 50 cents in this branch of the trade. Upturns in dressed prices today were still insufficient
