U. S. Steel Gains as Chrysler Rallies Slightly.
By United Press
NEW YORK, Aug. 7.—- | The stock market advanced | fractions to more than a point | today in the dullest trading in | several weeks. Steel and non- |
ferrous metal shares led. Bonds firmed as U. issues were quiet and higher. A strong tone in metal markets brought demand for Anaconda, which was the most active issue out
and gained more American Smelting approached 97
irregularly
for more thun a point gain, and |
Granby, Miami, Keanecott and Inspiration gained fractionally. Steel shares responded to advices that production continues high. U. S. Steel and Bethlehem rose more than a point, while National Steel | again reached a new high for the year at 981; on a fractional gain. Revived interest developed in Chrysler. The company still is undergoing labor difficulties but recent shorts in the stock reportedly were covering. This brought a gain of more than a point to around 117. General Motors showed more than 1: point gain.
Stocks Steady In Quiet Week
NEW YORK, Aug. 7.—Stocks made little progress this wesk and trading dropped off to around the lightest levels of the year as opera- | tors waded through a mass of conflicting market guides. The one bright spot came in the steadily improving nonferrous metal markets. London was exceptionally strong with the price for export copper rising to a level more than Si cent above the domestic price, bring- | ing beliefs that the 1l4-cent per | pound schedule here soon may be! lifted. Lead prices domestically | were increased $10 a ton, while zinc | —in which there is a tight domestic | supply situation—was increased 5 | cent a pound and reports existed of | heavy exports from England. As a result metal shares were | strong. Anaconda gained more than 3 points, while American Smelting, Inspiration, Kennecott, American | Zinz. St. Joseph Lead, Silver King Coalition and some of the lower | priced issues were strong the latter part of the week. Railroad shares were under conflicting influences. hey staged the best rally in months early in the | week as the carriers and 14-ton non- | operating unions agreed on a 3-cent per hour wage increase as against the union's demand for 20 cents an hour increase. But later they reacted when traders became aware | that the carriers must negotiate with | the brotherhoods next week and that | the agreement made with the non- | operating unions will mean about | $125.000.000 to $150.000.000 additional expense to the roads if a similar company is made with the brotherhoods. The fact that carloadings increased more than 11.000 cars in! the week ended July 30 was almost ignored. > A new strike at Chrysler plants was a disconcerting influence over the automobile shares and brought minor losses. In addition the weekly production figures showed a loss of more than 6000 cars from the preceding week, mainly because of | the Chrysler strike, and a lift to 100.000 units when Ford resumes after a hoiiday next week will be | only temporary as plants soon will be shutdown for the turnover of 1938 models. General Motors lifted prices on most of its cars which was considered a fairly favorable factor.
Steel production rese more than a | point to the best level since May 24 and the demand for steel scrap brought a further rise in the price at Pittsburgh. This resulted in a further rise in steel prices the forepart of the week but one that was more than erased in late profit- | taking. U. S. Steel finished with | more than a point loss while Bethle- | hem with an early good gain | dropped back to the previous close. | National Steel was a strong spot | mest of the week and rose to new highs for the year.
Electric power shares were under | mild pressure almost all week and | finished with losses ranging to 2! points. The figures for output this | week declined and the fact that | Congress adjournment still is not in |
S. Government |
than a point. |

PORKER PRICES REMAIN STEADY IN LOCAL TRADE
Hog Market Shows Signs Of Weakening as Top Remains Same.
Prices for hogs maintained a steady course today, but demand was limited, giving the trade a decidedly weak undertone, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, United States Department of Agriculture. Top was the same as Friday at $13.65 for choice 200 to 210-pound weights. Receipts at 800 head were about normal for Saturday. Compared with the close of last week barrows and gilts are 50 to 65 cents higher, while sows, after holding steady, today are mostly 50 cents higher. The closing bulk on sows rested at $11 to $12, top $12.25. Compared with the close of last week, strictly grain-fed steers and yearlings are strong to 25 cents higher, new high being paid for at $16.85 for four loads prime Illinoisfed bullocks., Most fed offerings moved from $15 to $16, with light yearlings at $15.50. Short-fed and grass steers closed 25 cents to mostly 50 cents lower, some clean-up sales off more late, with most grassers at $7 to $10, and short-feds up to $12.50. Choice heifers are steady, others 25 to 50 cents lower, with cows strong, vealers steady, and stockers and feeders 25 cents higher. Compared with the close of last week, lambs are fully 25 cents lower, spots on medium and lower grades off more. Week's top was $11.25, with closing peak at $11. Most offerings at the close cashed from $11.75 down. Sheep closed steady, with slaughter ewes $4.50 down.

WHEAT FUTURES GAIN SLIGHTLY; CORN ADVANGES
Firmer Cables Send Grain Future Bids Higher in Chicago.
By United Press
CHICAGO, Aug. T7.--Relatively firmer cables and strength in corn carried wheat prices up for small gains on the Chicago Board of
+ |[vIrade today. Prices pushed up bete
ter than a cent a bushel in the first hour of the session but commission house selling brought a reaction later. A little hedging added to the pressure on the market but cone tinued support from milling inter
ests and small speculators prevented the market from losing all of the early gains. At the close wheat was 4 to 1'§ cents higher, September $1.127%, corn was 1% to 2'4 cents higher, September $1.017%, and oats were 1s to 3% cent higher, September 30 cents, Deferred deliveries led the early upturn in wheat. In the final hour the May delivery showed a net gain of better than a cent a bushel while the September contract was up only fractions. Corn shot up nearly 3 cents a bushel shortly after the opening, but reacted later, losing about a half of the initial gains. Short-covering and stop-loss buying was uncovered on the advance, but toward the end
2 | Of the session speculators were ine
clined to take profits which result« ed in a reaction from the day's high points. A strong cash position and dry weather in sections of the corn belt, where rain is urgently needed, inspired buying. Smallest supplies of both old and new wheat in storage in the United States since 1919 had little effect on the market. These bullish figures were offset by a lack of demand for domestic wheat for export.
