R. I., Aug. 6.—Those citizens who haven's been able to sleep more than 10 hours a night for fear the America’s Cup would be lost to England after an 86-year stay in this country, relaxed today. The homely old pitcher, warmly in its flannel wrapper, lies in a Tiffany vault, and is to be safe from all harm for many, many years. Because yesterdav on the golden triangle of sea that rolls and pitches nine miles off Newport. an American boat, flving an American burgee, accomplished the sixteenth suecessful defense of yvachting's most treasured trophy. The boat was Ranger. the snubnosed. white-hulled sloop that was built with Mike Vanderbilt's millions and America’s best marine brains. With the cold and canny Vanderbilt at the wheel, and a stiff wind in her canvas, she boiled across the line to defeat T. O. M. Sopwith's Endeavour II for the fourth successive time. So. once again an English challenger was frustrated—just as all her predecessors since 1831 were frustrated.
