Warner Brothers Construct Real Undersea Craft for

Film, and the Thing

Has More Gadgets

Than Your New Radio.

By FREDERICK L. OTHMAN

United Press Hollywood Correspondent

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 5.—The Brothers Warner wanted a submarine to smash—so they built a private one today at

a cost of $20,000 cash!

This magnificent, sea-going toy will be visible on the screen for perhaps 15 minutes in the forthcoming movie

“Submarine,” around! These movie lads are

and then—blooie!

Talk about throwing money tops.

The Warners operation of the Navy for many of their undersea shots, but they did not ask the Government whether it had any spare submarines they could wreck as the climax to their photoplay. They figured that might be going a little too far. So they went to their own Jimmy Gibbons, head of the prop department, and said: “Jimmy, build us a submarine and quickly.” He did. All he hopes now is that it works. The boat really is a miniature which will look full-sized on the silver screen, but it is 26 feet long even so, and jammed tight with some of the fanciest machinery ever devised by man. Inside it are 10 electric motors, operating the twin propellors, the rudders, the bilge pumps, the torpedoes, and the water tanks.

Gadgets Work, Too |

All these gadgets are operated by remote control from a switchboard which has more gadgets on it than | an organ console. Undersea cables connect the controls to the boat. | Gibbons, who operates a machine | shop reminiscent of the Baldwin Locomotive Works and a Er plant almost as big as a Gran Rapids Furniture factory, spent oi days figuring out his submarine. Then he put it together, with bulk-heads every four inches, to withstand the pressure when the! boat is under 15 feet of water off | Catalina Island. It will be smashed | there by the undersea cameramen. A big chunk of the $20,000 went | into the torpedoes, which must | make a properly foaming wake | when fired. Gibbons solved that | problem by filling the tubes with | gas from one of those make-your-soda-water-at-home gadgets.

Hasn't Tried It Yet

Gibbons believed his submarine was one of the trickiest devices | ever built in this land of make- | believe. It hasn't put to sea vet, | but he's pretty certain it will work. | If it doesn't and $20.000 joins the | fishes, he fears he may have to look for another job. There is only one woman in the | cast, Doris Weston. The rest of | the performers are actors playing | he-man sailors. They include

|

George Brent, Pat O'Brien. The latter is in a bad way. He could hardly eat his lunch yesterday, account of his sore throat. He got it from being pitched too often in water, which was wet, from the

deck of a submarine, which was a fake. O’Brien didn't say how he liked being a movie actor. It hurt too much to talk.

Goldwyn Signs Dance Director

Times Special HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 5.— John Pierce, Broadway musical comedy dance director, has been signed by

| Samuel Goldwyn to stage modern

dances in the forthcoming technicolor extravaganza, “The Goldwyn Follies.” He will work in association with George Balanchine, maitre de ballet of the famed American ballet,

| who is in charge of choreography.

Mr. Pierce's footlight success in Manhattan include, among others, (the dancing numbers in “Wonder Bar” ang ° ‘Meet My Sister.”

‘MERLE OBERON GETS NEW ROLE

Times Special HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 5.—Alexander Korda announced today that | following “Divorce of Lady X,” Merle Oberon's first technicolor starring vehicle, the actress will play {the top role in “Over the Moon.” Robert E. Sherwood, prominent play-

wright, has written the screen play for “Over the Moon,” as a special film story for Miss Oberon. Mr. Korda will produce this feature in natural color.

Joe Brown To Go on Air

Comedian to Broadcast

Chicago Ball Games.

Times Special . HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 5. — Once again Joe E. Brown has shaken the dust and glitter of Hollywood from his feet and departed for Chicago,

“Ask him

baseball and radio. He hopped a plane for the Windy City a few | hours after completing his new | comedy, “Fit for a King.” Brown was engaged by a breakfast food company to broadcast the games of the Chicago Cubs and the White Sox for one month. At the conclusion of this contract, he will return to the Coast, gather up Mrs. Brown and start out for a vacation through Alaska and Canada. He will be back in Hollywood the latter part of September to prepare for his next movie. The comic is Hollywood's premier baseball enthusiast. Between the finishing of his film and his departure for Chicago, he found time

to don a uniform once worn by the great Dizzy Dean and take part in a charity game between movie comedians and leading men.

Consul Approves Honor Legion Ribbon.

Times Special HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 5.—When Edward H. Griffith directed “Care Metropole,” he allowed Adolph Menjou to wedy a ribbon of the French Legion of Honor, and protestations that followed reverberated for weeks. Mr. Menjou played a crook, and objections were loud and many. On the set of “I'll Take Romance,” starring Grace Moore, Ferdinand Gottschalk walked before the camera with a ribboned button of a chevalier of the French Legion in his lapel Mr. Griffith's eves popped. Normally a quiet man, he virtually shouted the name of his secretary. Consul Telephoned “Get Joseph Viala, the French consul, on the phone,” he yelled. if it’s all right for Mr. Gottschalk to wear this button. I don’t want any more international complications.” “Hold everything,” ordered Art Black, assistant director. A few minutes later the secretary returned with the French Consul's decision. As long as the character Mr. Gottschalk was playing was an honorable one it was perfectly all right for the button to be worn. “Okay camera!” raid Mr. Griffith, and “I'll Take Romance” continued on its merry way sans international complications.
