except the sympathy she incites from others. She 1s like a child who cries because it doesn't know how to get attention any other wav. About the only thing you can do for your friend is to let her see vou do not admire mawkish selfsacrifice. Under such self-abase-ment there lives a sturdy ego with amazing tenacity, but mixed up about its relation to life. The chances are your friend is a person who would like to rule, to dominate, to be worshipped, but for some reason she has gone into reverse. I say this because the martyr is
famous for his stubborn nature. He Is never the weakling we imagine |
him to be, but has a definite purpose beneath his nonresistance. purpose is to gain power over the
people who live with him by making |
them feel like guilty wretches. His attack on life is not positive, negative. Nevertheless it tack I everyone with a martyr in the family, for it is noth-

ing short of slavery to live with one. |
Every tear, every reproach. every crushied look is a thrust for power. and the worst of it is that it so often works. If you ever have to live with a martyr, you will find that you will do almost anything to avoid the misery of his outbreaks. Just as you refrain from telling vour friend that ner husband cheats right and left.
SO everyone protects his own private | martyr from pain because he can't bear to see him writhe. Useful ad- |
vise, isn't it? JANE JORDAN.

Ragweed, in case you don't know it already, is the cause of the majority of hay fever cases. And Illinois, Indiana and Michigan are just the places for it. If vou don't believe it, just wait till about Aug. 15, and take a gander at the man sniffling next to you in the elevator. That is. JI your own eves aren't already ton bloodshot to do you any good. Not that the Grecian god-food is the only cause. It's the most common one, however, of the fall type. There are two other types, early spring and late spring. but they don't affect as many people. The late spring variety is commonly called rose fever or cold, but roses don't have a thing to do with it. Neither does goldenrod cause fall hay fever. As a matter of fact. few of the insectpollinated plants cause hayv-fever. it's the wind-pollinated ones that
do the job. Sie ragweed universal in North America the nearest escape is northern Canada or Bermuda. Europe is almost devoid of the weed. which is one compensation for Hitler, outside plumbing and customs officers. Hay fever, according to one prominent physician and allergy expert, is but one form of the many allergie afflictions that beset the human race. Allergies, defined as acute sensitivity of individuals to substances which do not affect most people, are of a thousand varieties. In fact, allergic disorders mimic all sorts of discases. Gastro-intestinal ailments, migraine headaches, eczema, hives and some types of arthritis and edema may be allergic manifestations. Allergies, incidentally, are usually inherited.

n ” n ANY people are allergic to certain foods and symptoms may show up in any number of ways. Animal dandruff, goat's fur, feathers, all sorts of fungi. grain rusts, molds and bacteria can turn the trick. Among the more exotic elements which affect some people allergically are horse dust and

tulip bulbs. If you are a sufferer from ragweed hay fever, there are a number of things you can do about it. You can cut down all the ragweed before it pollinates, but this is difficult because it grows in every
| vacant lot and the pollen is car-
ried hundreds of miles by the wind in sufficient quantities to cause irritation. And besides, the
seeds stay in the ground in a fer-
tile state for 30 or 40 years.

OU can go to Europe and gamble that the next war won't he as bad as hay fever, or you can g0 to the seashore and pray for winds blowing from the ocean. Or you can get inoculated once or twice a week for several months preceding hay fever season and hope for the best. You can also do nothing about | it and Just sniffie, sneeze, blow your and scratch your eves. That's what you'll probably do { anyway. } } A
