Steers scaling 1215 pounds brought $16.25, the day's top. Numerous loads of yearlings, as well as light steers, cashed at $16 and bulk of the fed crop had a spread at $15 to $16. BUY STATE W WHEAT, DAKOTA MILL TOLD

Governor Demands Higher Prices for Farmer.

By Uniled Press BISMARCK, N. D., Aug. 4.—Governor William Langer today ordered the state-owned mill to buy all the North Dakota wheat necessary to defeat ends of “grain gamblers,” and to pay higher prices than any leading markets. The Governor threatened to buy “every bushel of wheat raised in the State, paying farmers cash, unless the market pays what the grain is worth.”

North Dakota's spring wheat crop | has been estimated at nearly 100 million bushels. Governor Langer said his move is backed by the state-controlled Bank of North Da-

He! charged grain markets were not giving farmers an “honest” bushel. The downturn continued in mid« session until a loss of 2 cents a bushel on September futures was reached. Resting orders to buy and some short covering at that level checked the downturn and started a movement to higher prices. The political turmoil over crop prices has been attracting attention and there was a tendency to turn to the sidelines to await further repercus< sions. Wheat receipts were 236 cars. Corn prices turned sharply higher in a broad buying movement that followed the early downturn, Early optimism over the strength of the market was justified in later deal« ings.
