Jane Jordan will study your problems for you and answer your leiters in this column,

DEAR JANE JORDAN-— 1 am in love with a boy six years older than I, who has been married and has a baby but now is divorced. He does not have a very good job but doesn’t have to pay anything for the support of the baby. I was having dates with him at the time of his marriage announcement and have been having dates with him again since the divorce. Whenever we are in a crowd he |

I use. Can you understand why 1

want to marry this boy when everything and everybody is against it? MARIE.

ANSWER-—Not, altogether, but I can make a few guesses. To begin with you are an only child, accustomed to your own way, no doubt. Very likely this boy represents the | first major desire you ever had | which wasn’t gratified. It was a blow | to your pride, to your belief in your | own supremacy when he married | somebody else while he was going with you. You never forgave the | affront to your ego and want to subdue the man at any cost. In my opinion the cost of marriage with him, if you succeed, will be too high. You wouldn't be getting a bargain at any price. Obviously he is not in love with anyone unless it is himself, and his conquests are made to adorn his own ego, with no though of the girls’ feel-

“Hello, there, Jocko, how are you | tonight?" | “I'm not Jocko. I'm Teddy,” declared the little fellow seriously. Then he added, ‘You're Jocko vourself.” This had a twinkle in it, for suddenly he had decided to meet joke with joke, but his mother said instantly, “Why Teddy, aren't very polite. talk that way to Mr. Smith.” But Mr. Smith, afraid of little boys who stood round and got your number by just looking at you, had to do something about it. ‘When he and his wife had shed their wraps and stepped into the parlor, there was that funny little insect in the white suit, hopping up on the best chair in the room and all ready to stare him down, Why didn’t people put their Kids to bed when they asked company in for dinner? Getting Teddy's Goat Teddy was ordered off the chair, and Mr. Smith told to take it. “Oh, we'll fix that, won't we Jocko?” he said lifting the usurper to his knee. But Teddy scrambled down. “I'm | not Jocko. My name's Ted.” This | time he was mad. He stamped one | foot. | Now Mr. Smith had him. This | was what he wanted—to get the youngster upset and thinking of his own troubles, instead of sizing him up with the stare that he couldn't | endure in children.

How about your cute and attractive mother? Do you want to show her that you can get a husband, too? ‘Bandanas and | ‘ : ~ Denim Inspire Sports Frocks

By GERTRUDE BAILEY Times Special Writer Bandanas and faded blue denim, | indigenous to the Southwest, have inspired a gay collection of sports clothes that are taking on national fashion significance this summer. More Formal Than Slacks

The border print dress is just the thing to slip on for dinner after a day on the mountain or an afternoon in the surf. Ihformal, gay, it is degrees more formal than slacks and shorts to justify a quick change before dinner. : In choosing vacation togs like the ones sketched today you have every excuse to go in for bright colored shoes, patent leather or kidskin. See that your hose match the shade of your acquiréd sun-tan and the color contrast will be even more effective.

Fall Dresses Feature Center-Back Closings

Though it goes back to a “hook and eye” era, it's buttons or slide fasteners now for the many dresses that are being shown in fall collections with center-back closings. And whether buttons or slide-fas-teners, the backs of these dresses are as flat as skin. Bodice fronts, consequently, have the unbroken profile that is so important this season. These closings follow the spine not only in their location, but often in their length, particularly the mechanical slide closing. These and the large buttons and buttonholes make dressing so easy that women will have no opportunity for complaint about difficulty in getting into dresses; the only complaint will come the cartoonists at their loss of favored theme lampooning the struggle of ;

Patent Shoe Tips

The preservation of patent leather shoes presents difficulties because, by the very nature of the hard finish, it will crack eventually. But the fateful day may be delayed by occasionally applying just the small est touch of pure vaseline and rubbing it in well with a soft cloth. Patent leather shoes should be polished by rubbing with a soft cloth only. As extremely cold temteratures tend to crack this leather, patent shoes should be kept in a moderately warm place.

Solution to Previous Problem By WILLIAM E. M'’KENNEY American Bridge League Secretary HIS is the seventh of a series of 12 articles explaining the “Standardized Code of Contract Bridge Bidding,” a new textbook indorsed by hundreds of the nation's bridge writers and players. Simple, natural inferential bidding is the key to success at the bridge table. The modern bridge expert does not indulge in complicated artificial acrobatics. On the contrary he regards them as unnecessary, and knows that they impede sound bidding tactics. Today's hand, taken from the many {illustrations given in this book, which seeks to standardize bidding practices, is a fine example of inferential bidding.

Women Warned To Dye Hair in Original Color

By ALICIA HART NEA Service Staff Writer The woman who decides to dye her graying locks should have the original job done by an expert who knows what kind of dye to use and how to mix various shades so the hair, when dry, will be the color it originally was. It is best, of course, to return to him every two weeks. If this is impossible, she must get the same dye to use at home, and ask to be taught how to apply it. Remember, always, that it is a mistake for a once-brown=-haired woman, now gray, to apply bright red or black or blond dye. She should realize that her natural col oring is keyed to brown. The sensible procedure is to dye the gray locks the color they once were. Nowadays, some of the most attractive women of stage, screen and society do not think it necessary to

dve their gray hair at all. It's smart to be 40, and smarter still | to admit it. Furthermore, white or gray hairs, provided they are clean and shining with health, soften the features of the face. Don't make an appointment for a dye=-job too hurriedly. | Weigh the advantages and disad- | vantages carefully. If you decide not to dye, brush every night with renewed vigor. Shampoo often and correctly, rinsing meticulously, to avoid a yellow=ish tinge. Get a tonic to correct any special defect. Keep your coiffure neat and smooth and trim. Double-Breast Dinner Coats

Men who make a habit of rigging themselves up in proper style for dinner, regardless of the weather, seem to have voted almost unanimously for double-breasted coats. They come in peaked lapels or shawl collars. Shawl collars are popular, particularly in the colored jackets. Peaked lapels are seen oftener on conventional black or midnight blue jackets. Bug Spray Recipe The garden that had the fewest rose bugs this summer used a spray of one gallon of water, one pint of molasses and two teaspoonfuls of arsenate of lead. Wasps under a plank board walk were routed out with one-third sugar to two-thirds borax, the mixture being put down the cracks of the walk. This is an old remedy for ants in hotbeds.

Scientific Diet Control

nanas

Nowadays in all large institutions, also in armies, navies and similar gatherings of men, it is customary to control the diet scientifically. Since the nature of beriberi is une derstood, the dietitian will take the necessary steps to prevent its oc= currence. If rice represents the main por tion of the diet, wvhole rice should be used instead of the polished kind. If bread is the basis of the diet, whole wheat flour will be used ine stead of white. For the average person, white flour is quite satisfactory, provided he takes enough milk, meat, eggs, fruits and vegetables to provide for the required intake of vitamins. Even when bread is the main basis of the diet, beans, peas or similar vegetables should be served at least once a week. Fresh Meat Required

In addition, fresh meat should ba served at least three times a week and eggs and fresh milk just as ofte en as the budget permits, When these changes in the diet are pro= vided for, periberi will disappear. Naturally it is necessary to have the best advice and treatment from a physician to overcome some of the serious symptoms that develop. Sometimes this will involve the use of electrical currents for exercising the muscles, the use of heat and other methods to bring about suite able improvement.
