AUTOGYRO AIDS AIR BATTLE ON ELM TREE BUGS
Plane Able to Hover Over! Diseased Areas and Map Locations.
By MAJ. AL WILLIAMS Times Special Writer Ground defense can't stop an air attack; but wings can be fought
with wings, and even the bugs are | &
finding this out. Armies and navies are still dreaming of stopping air attack with popguns on the ground, and thousands of farmers stick to the old pumpgun method of fighting the boll weevil and vegetation germs. One autogyro I saw recently attracted my attention. Department of Agriculture” painted on its side. mine—I never knew him by any other name than Mac—was its pilot. And did he have a story? Thousands of beautiful elm trees were withering. spreading rapidly, and causing such devastation that it was estimated American elm trees would soon be a growth of the past unless something radically effective was done. Department of Agriculture scientists studied the epidemic and discovered
that a tiny bug with a terrific name was killing our elm trees. Cause of Loss Found This bug was known to be the little flying foe which had wrecked the elm trees of Holland, and the epidemic was promptly tagged as the Dutch elm tree disease. With origin and identity established, the | Departnient of Agriculture opened its campaign. Ground expeditions immediately began scouting, The discovery of an infected tree started axes swing- | ing and bonfires roaring, but the | bugs were flying and the scientists were on the ground and for every tree destroyed by the ground crew the bugs killed a dozen. The bugs were winning hands down, Then the Department of Agriculture took to the air to fight wings with wings. Airplanes were too fast. A scientist observer in the rear seat of an airplane could spot infected trees, but the plane was moving too fast for him to identify their locations exactly. he Department of Agriculture bought some autogyros.
Map-Making Easy
An autogyro can hover and dally long enough for an observer to pinprick a detail map, and turn in a report at the end of a day that really means something to the! ground crew. It's a simple thing] to fiy over a piece of country and describe the ground covered, but it’s a different matter to check your position so that a man on the ground can go directly to an indidicated house, open field, rock, or clump of trees. The tree doctors in the back seats of autogyros soon became expert in| detecting diseased elm trees from the air, and equally adept in reading their air maps. The bugs were moving fast, but like any army they had to eat as they traveled, and each time they ate they left yeltowed elms behind them. These
