Stock Market Gains in Week

By United Press NEW YORK, July 24.—The stock market advanced into new high ground on the recovery during the past week. Bonds also advanced, while major commodities declined under the lead of cotton and corn, and business trends were mixed. Stocks were aided by death of the Court Bill at least as it would apply to the Supreme Court and by prospect of early adjournment of Congress. There were numerous aids for individual shares in the way of higher earnings statements and high dividend payments. The feature report of the week came late Friday from Chrysler Corp. which reported for the second quarter net income equal to $380 a share, against $4.18 in the second quarter a year ago, the record for the period, and $2.51 a share in the first quarter of 1936. Gains outnumbered losses in business. Steel operations were practically unchanged for the week at 825 per cent of capacity, against 82.7 per cent in the preceding week. Steel scrap mounted at Fittsburgh and other centers.

Meanwhile automobile production decreased to 88,055 units for the] week, according to Ward's reports. That compared with 115380 in the previous week and 99,329 a year ago. The drop, caused entirely by a shutdown in Ford plants for vacations, was anticipated. This week's level— the lowest since strikes tied up the industry in February—is expected to hold for the next two weeks. Automobile issues gained substantially under lead of Chrysler. A feature late in the week on the market was demand for utility shares. Hope for early Congress adjournment helped the group. Another factor was the weekly report of the Edison Electric Institute on production of electricity. The total 2,208,005,000 kwhs, a gain of 13.2 per cent over 1936, was an all-time record high. Car loadings for the week ended last Saturday totaled 770,075, a rise of 87,870 over the preceding week. However, roads reporting thus far for June show declines in income. Increases are anticipated, however, and rail stocks joined the rise in the general market. Retail trade improved 2 to 6 per cent over the previous week and was 8 to 20 per cent over the 1936 week, while wholesale trade gained 12 to 22 per cent. Mercantile issues were less prominent than others, although they registered advances. The Department of Agriculture reported the 1937 wheat crop as the most valuable in 10 years and this focused attention on the farm implement shares which rose to new highs. They in turn aided the mail orders. Gasoline stocks continued to decline and the total represented only 43 days’ supply. The consumption of gasoline now at a record high was an aid to the oils, which turned active. Declines were noted in such lines as coal mining, and lumber production. Bank clearings made a slight dip from a year ago.

Oat Futures Drop 14 to 2 Cents in Chicago.

By United Press CHICAGO, July 24—Wheat fue tures were subject to only fractional changes in a quiet session at the board of trade today. At the close wheat was 4 cent higher to 13. cents lower, July $1.20%; new corn was 1% cent highe er to 27% cents lower, July $1.08%

old corn was % cent higher, July $1.03%, and oats were !2 to 2% cents lower, July 33 cents. Commission houses and locals were on both sides of the market while hedging sales were prominent. Failure of Liverpool to ree spond satisfactorily to the rally here yesterday combined with ree ports of rains in sections of the Canadian west to check buying power. Winnipeg eased after a mixed opening but a later rally reduced losses.

Softness pervaded the corn mare ket. Houses with cash connections bought July after the start and the rise in the current month brought out short covering in deferred futures. Continued liquidation and stop loss selling took their toll.
