Harry Cooper Is Favored in Chicago Open
Six Ryder Cup Players in $10,000 Tourney Which Opens Today.
By United Press CHICAGO, July 23.—A baldish little man with a bagful of tricks led the largest field in the history of | golf over the Medinah Country Club's two tournament courses today in the first round of the $10,000 Chicago Open. Lighthorse Harry Cooper, leading | money winner of the season and on | his record the best player in the | nation, was a 6-to-1 favorite. | He faced an army of golfers ex- | pected to reach 500, including six | members of America's victorious Ryder Cup team, the intercollegiate | champion, Mildred (Babe) Didrik- | son, a one-armed player and an 11- | year-old boy. { There was no way to check the | exact size of the field until the first round is completed late today. The finishers will play 18 holes again tomorrow to determine the 50 lowscoring professionais and 25 best amateurs for the final 36 holes Sundav, Chief stumbling blocks ahead of | Cooper appeared to be the Ryder Cup contingent headed by Ralph Guldahl, who won the U. S. Open with a record 281 at Birmingham, | Mich. Guldahl shook off his sea legs in & hurry yesterday, coasting over the first nine holes of Medinah's tough No. 3 course at even par in his first | venture since the British Open. Coupled with the U. S. Open King at 8 to 1 was Sam Snead of White Sulphur Springs, W. Va, who appeared to have the open won until Guldahl came in with his 281. Other short-priced contenders were Henry Picard of Hershey, Pa. | who would catch up with Cooper's | money-winning total if he won the | $3000 first prize; Horton Smith and Ky Laffoon of Chicago; Gene Sara- | zen of Brookfield Center, Conn. Johnny Revolta of Chicago and Jimmy Thomson, Shawnee-on-Dela-ware, Pa.
Amateur Gets a 69
Laffoon and Thomson have trained well for the tournament. Each posted 71's, one over par, on | course No. 1 this week. Pat Sawyer, Minneapolis professional, reported another 71, while Joe Paletti of Winchester, val came in with the lone 69. The amateur entrants were led hy Chick Harbart, who dived 20 under par in winning the Michigan State title; Fred Haas and Paul | Leslie of Louisiana State, Johnny Lehman and Johnny Dawson of Chicago. A special concession—driving off | the front tee on one water hole— was granted Don Dunkelberger, 11, of Greensboro, N. C., but Jimmy Nicholls, New York's one-armed star, will play | it Straight.
