SHOT IN CHEST,

TRAXLER VOWS |

HE'LL RECOVER

Meek Farmer Explains How Gunman Was Seized And Pal Slain.

By United Press HUGO, Okla., July 22.—Pete Traxler, the Southwest's No. 1 desperado, smoked cigarets in the hospital today and sent word to his wife that he was going to recover from bullet wounds inflicted by one of his kidnap victims. Doctors were not so sure, but believed he had a good chance. He was shot through the shoulder and chest by James E. Denton, a meek, graying oil field worker, who killed his companion, Fred Tindol. Traxler led a break from the Texas prison farm 12 days ago and since then he and Tindol and at times another of the escaped convicts have been dodging police of two states. They had stolen a dozen cars and kidnaped five hostages, including Baird Markham Jr, son of a wealthy oil man. Yesterday afternoon, Denton, last of the string of hostages, turned the tables on them.

Wife Captured

Traxler's wife, who had joined the fugitives, was caught Tuesday night. Ben Carter, Bryan County attorney, said he would file charges of armed robbery and Kkidnaping against Traxler, but there was some doubt whether he would be tried here or returned to Texas where he is under life sentence. Denton took his praise modestly. “I was scared to death part of the time,” he said, “but I figured if it got dark and we were down around the river bottoms they probably would kill me and get away. So when the opportunity came I acted.” Fred Trimmer, Caddo farmer whose car was taken after Traxler had run Denton’s into a ditch, was also a hostage. He fired one shot after Denton fired, but his missed. Denton shot Tindol under the arm pit and fired a second shot into him when he tried to leap from the car, He was dead when he fell to the ground. “Traxler tried to get the rifle beside him but it was too late,” Denton said. “Then he begged us not to shoot him again.” Couldn't Beat Sleep

Fatigue was the enemy Traxler and Tindol could not beat although they were able to cutwit scores of police. The fugitives were without rest for 48 hours. Yesterday, about noon, they were so tired they ordered Trimmer, who was driving them, to stop on a shady side road. “Traxler’s head began to nod after we'd been there a few minutes,” Denton said. “The first time or two he came awake with a jerk. Then his head sagged and he was asleep. I could see Trimmer was watching him. Then Tindol nodded, but he wasn't asleep. Just when I was afraid he was going to stay awake his head went down again. It was the chance I needed. I was scared for what would happen if I failed, but it was all over in a minute, and eas ydone, too.” Harry Roberts, one of Traxler's companions in the escape, was captured in a restaurant early today near Monticello, Ark. Roberts offered no resistance when Night Marshal T. R. Scott and State Ranger O. V. Whitted captured him, The fugitive had gone into the restaurant for some sandwiches, The wife of the night marshal operated the restaurant. She suspected Roberts’ identity and sent a small son for the marshal.

Johnson County Authorities Study Hair and Cloth.

By United Press EDINBURG, Ind. July 22.—Johnson County authorities today studied contents of twu lard cans containing what apparently was a dismembered human body. :

The cans were taken from a gravel pit west of here by Roy Jones, a WPA worker. Police believed an effort had been made to dispose of the contents since the cans were filled with guicklime. Hair, bones, pieces of striped cloth, stains of dried blood, and a fragment torn from an Indianapolis newspaper dated Sept. 1, 1932, were found in the can. Police recalled that another body had been found in the same locality by a WPA worker a year ago, but it
